Chapter 5: Legions of the Dark

Opening

narrator
Having reunited with General Caellach, Lyon's army resumes their marching.
Soon, the border town of Serafew comes into view.
The people of both Renais and Grado have long used the town as a meeting place.
It stands as testimony to the friendship the two nations have shared these many years.
Now, however, Serafew is teeming with Grado troops.
Having sent word ahead, they expect the border guard's leader, Saar, to be awaiting them.
But even within Grado itself, those who oppose the war are making their moves...
duessel
(smiles) Ahh, Serafew.
You know, my prince, I always loved this city.
A bustling center of commerce and travel.
You could forget frontiers exist, looking at this hamlet.
lyon
(smiles) I've fond memories of the place myself...
duessel
Oh, do you, my liege?
lyon
One time, a fire ravaged this city. A kid was consumed by the flames...
There was no hope for her. But then, I and the court mages arrived.
We used... our magic. It was incredible...
Her life was restored! Her injuries disappeared!
We saved that girl, Duessel!
Oh, if you could have seen the tears of joy in her mother's eyes!
duessel
I was not aware of this...
But it sounds like you did a great deed that day, Prince.
I am certain your father must have been proud beyond words.
lyon
(frowns) My father, huh... I wonder...

It's... eerily quiet here today...

duessel
...True... Not a citizen or a guard in sight.
No sign of Captain Saar, either. It is strange.
saleh
Pardon me, may I ask you a question?
lyon
Mm?
saleh
I'm looking for someone.
Have you seen a young girl with indigo hair?
lyon
A young girl with... ...Indigo hair...

U-Urrrk...

saleh
Sir? Are you feeling all right?
duessel
Worry not on our account.
We have not seen anybody fitting that description.
saleh
Hmmm... Thank you. Sorry to intrude.
(Saleh leaves.)
lyon
...What a... curious man.
I wonder where he hails from...
duessel
Is everything all right, Prince?
If you are feeling under the weather, I can have a healer...
lyon
No, Duessel. It's okay. I didn't sleep so well last night, that's all.
duessel
If you say so, my prince...
lyon
Hmm... Hold on! I think I hear something...
Some kind of commotion in the town square?
duessel
Blast...
lyon
Glen!

(Glen approaches.)

What can you see from above?

glen
...There is a group of people gathered in the square...
Armed men. They do not look like Grado knights.
lyon
What?! How can that be?
Can you see Captain Saar?
glen
I think... Yes! That's him.
He's... fighting the men? No-- THEY are fighting him!
caellach
Lots of mercs were gathering in this town when I was here.
Figured the captain had hired them to bolster his forces.
Looks like someone hired them to get rid of HIM instead.
lyon
Hurry, Generals! Assemble the troops!
We must go to his aid!
duessel
We do not know who our foe is.
I would advise caution.
lyon
This city controls the flow of people between Grado, Renais and Frelia.
It is a pivotal point of defense. We have to keep a firm hold on it.
Whoever the enemy might be... They must be stopped.
glen
Of course, Your Highness.
Duessel! Let us gather the soldiers.
caellach
(smirks) Trouble just follows you around, doesn't it, Prince?
Heh, fine by me. Let's see how this pans out...
(Caellach, Glen, and Lyon head out.)
duessel
...Even this place must become a battlefield...
saar
Dammit... Hold your positions, you fools! Battle formations!
soldier
Sir, it's hopeless! They've already stabbed nearly the entire guard!
(Saar huffs.)
saar
What do you suggest we do, then?!
soldier
...Lay down our arms and hope for the best?
saar
Imbecile! His Majesty the Emperor is counting on us to protect the border!
Moreover, His Highness the Prince is making his way here as we speak!
With his army's aid, we'll be able to turn the tides of this battle!
We shall give these filthy sellswords their duly reward for defying Grado!
Grado's will be done! Do not falter, men!
soldier
...Nngh... If only I could be that enthusiastic...
Well, not like there's much we can do at this point.
Hold fast, everyone! Let's fight till our arms fall off!
(The camera focuses on the mercenaries, who are led by Joshua.)
joshua
...Whew... They're tough, I've got to give them that.
But the townsfolk have paid us handsomely to give them the boot.
And, all things considered? I think it's the right thing to do.
Now all that's left is to see if we'll win or lose... Hmmm...

Tails. That's bad luck and more bad luck.
Here I thought today couldn't get worse after I lost my killing edge...
I guess I'd better get serious, then.

caellach
Hey...
lyon
What's on your mind, Caellach?
caellach
See, Prince, I believe an old friend of mine might be in town.
lyon
A potential ally?
caellach
Oh, not at all. We might even cross blades with him. However...
If possible, let me be the one to finish him.
I've got some, uh... unfinished business with him.
lyon
...If opportunity allows.
caellach
Heh. That's all I can ask for, Prince.

Chapter Tips

Eye of the Tiger

It seems General Caellach has some kind of scheme in motion involving that one dashing rogue with the hat.

Perhaps see about giving him a more accurate sword before his confrontation with his redhaired friend.

Obligatory earlygame cleric

No more waiting. Your earlygame healer awaits you in this map.

There is also a heal staff for Lyon. Start building that staff rank, bookworm boy!

Surprisingly, not a game over

The good captain Saar is, in fact, not relevant to this story.

Should he die, there would be no great consequences. In fact, the map just ends if Saar dies!

Of course, you lose a WHOLE bunch of stuff if that happens. Also, Saar's items won't go to the convoy if he dies here.

But hey. All in the name of LTC, eh?

Also keep in mind killing all the enemies ends the map as well.

Enemy Turn 1

(The camera highlights the northern house.)
saaga
"How could you tell my niece that she'll never amount to anything?"

"She insisted on leaving on a righteous journey of justice!"

"You're going after her and helping her out in her quest!"

(Saaga vibrates with frustration.)

"You'll return with her or you won't return at all!"

Hmph! That's just as well. I don't WANT to return!
I didn't become court troubadour of Rausten for this!
Enduring the wails and tantrums of that spoiled cretin L'Brat!
Sigh... Rausten has become a circus since Mansel was named pontifex.
Perhaps I should use this chance to find greener pastures to call home...

Turn 2

(Brigands enter from the southeast.)
brigand
Look at this. Now's our chance!
C'mon, lads!
Let's join the fight and steal our way through this pathetic town!

Enemy Turn 2

(The camera highlights the central house.)
tiffani's
mother
O-Oh, my goodness!
That dastard Saar wasn't enough, now we are being accosted by bandits?!

(She fidgets anxiously.)

Tiffani! Tiffani, where are you?!

tiffani
Here, Mom...
tiffani's
mother
Honey, bandits have made their way into Serafew.
Normally I'd count on the mercenaries to protect us, but...
Distracted as they are fighting Saar, I'm not sure if they'll...

Listen, I want you to hide until it's all over.

tiffani
Wait! I can protect us!
I can use magic now, remember?
tiffani's
mother
Come now. A few sparks won't deter those lawless thugs.
(Tiffani bounces with determination.)
tiffani
I-I can't let them destroy our home!
What if they hurt you, Mom?
tiffani's
mother
Tiffani... I'm touched, but please! I'm begging you, honey...
Prince Lyon did not save your life so you could throw it away like this.
tiffani
I have to be brave and strong like Mister Lion!
I'm gonna keep us safe! Wait for me here, Mom!
(Tiffani rushes out.)
tiffani's
mother
Tiffani, no!
joshua
...What?! A child's come out to the streets? Now?
I shouldn't have to say this, but nobody touch a hair on her head!
Anyone who does answers to me! Got it, everyone?

...Blast, cutthroats are crawling into town as well...
We're too busy with Grado. I hope those ruffians don't find her...

Turn 5

(Brigands enter from the east.)
brigand
(grinning) Wahaha! Would you look at this!
A killing edge, just lying around on the ground!
What kind of idiot loses such a valuable thing?
Well, finders keepers! And now, to steal myself MORE stuff!
Boy do I love being a brigand! Wahaha!

Conversations

Saar does not have a special death quote in this chapter.

Tiffani Death (if unrecruited)

tiffani
M-Mom...

O'Neill & Beran

o'neill
Hail! Archer...
beran
Good evening. I am Beran.
o'neill
Well met! I am O'Neill. Warrior of Grado!
beran
Well met.
o'neill
I must say, I am rather impressed by your technique.
Archers often lose sight of what truly matters on the field.
Raw power! But you have enough of it to match me.
beran
You need strength to pull bowstrings.
It is a common misconception, actually.
People think it's so easy until they try.
o'neill
(smirks) Heh. Ain't that the truth.
(serious) Tried once, myself. Maybe I'll try again one day.
But for now, I find the axe more... personal.
I like getting up close with my foes, like a true warrior.
Not to discredit the bow, of course.
Ultimately, battle is a team effort.
Everyone is equally valuable. Archers, warriors and the rest!
beran
Indeed.
o'neill
(smiles) Hahaha. I like you, Beran. You don't mince words.
Watch my back from the back lines, archer!
beran
(smiles) That is the way of a true bowman.

[Beran & O'Neill gain C-rank support with each other.]

Lyon & Tiffani

lyon
Huh?! Wait, aren't you...?
(Tiffani starts.)
tiffani
Gasp!
lyon
It is you...
Ah, I'm so sorry. What was your name?
tiffani
(smiles) M...Mister Lion! You're here to save us...!
lyon
(smiles) Haha... I guess I am, aren't I?
But I can't help but wonder what you're doing out here.
There's a battle going on right now, you know.
tiffani
I'm protecting Mom and our home!
Look, look! I can use magic now!
lyon
So, your mom's at home, right?
How about we both step inside and I have a word with her?
Don't worry. My friends will keep watch outside.
tiffani
Okay, Mister Lion!
(Lyon enters Tiffani's house.)
tiffani's
mother
Prince Lyon... Words cannot express...
Twice now, I owe to you my beloved child's life...
Oh, she can be such a handful. I'm so sorry...
lyon
Don't worry about it...

...I see her scar has not faded. Forgive me...
If only I were more powerful, I could have healed her completely.
Instead, she'll carry the reminder of that awful day for the rest of her life...

tiffani's
mother
It is a reminder of that day, indeed...
(smiles) But also of your kindness, Prince Lyon, and of the unrepayable debt we owe to you.
I haven't much I can offer, but please, just ask.
There has to be something I can do for you...
lyon
......
When did Tiffani learn to use magic?
tiffani's
mother
(serious) Ever since that day, you've been her hero, my prince.
She kept asking for a "magic book like Mister Lion's."
Thankfully, the local shopkeep kindly gifted her a basic tome.
It's actually been rather handy in the kitchen.
lyon
I can sense... great potential in Tiffani...
tiffani's
mother
Hmm?
lyon
Would you allow me to take her along?
tiffani's
mother
W-What? My daughter...?
lyon
She wants to become a sorcerer like me, right?
I can help her learn.
tiffani's
mother
I... Are you certain, my prince?
lyon
I won't place her in undue danger. I promise.
tiffani's
mother
......
Truth be told, she has wanted to see the world for some time...
And I trust you, Prince Lyon. You are as good a man as your father.
If she's fine with it, then...
offscreen
Of course! I'd love to travel with Mister Lion!
tiffani's
mother
Eavesdropping, were you?
How many times must I tell you? He's "Prince Lyon" to you!
He's the heir to the throne of Grado, not your friend next door!
lyon
It's all right, really...
I'm not the sort of person others hold in esteem.
tiffani's
mother
Eh? Oh, uh... W-Well, if you say so...
tiffani
Please, please, please! Let me go with him, Mom!
tiffani's
mother
...Very well. But I expect you to behave!
Don't make Prince Lyon regret his decision, you hear?

And... Please, write as often as you can.

tiffani
Mom...

(Tiffani quivers.)

Sniff... I-I'm gonna miss you...

(Tiffani's mother hugs her.)
tiffani's
mother
And I you, my dear... But this is a good thing!
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity...
You have to make the most of it, all right, Tiffani?
Don't worry about me... If you're happy, I'm happy.
tiffani
Sniff... Thank you, Mom... Thank you so much...
lyon
......
(They return to the battlefield.)
lyon
(smiles) Well then, Tiffani.
Are you prepared to go on an adventure?
tiffani
(smiles) I'm ready!
lyon
Stay close to me always. I'll keep you safe.
tiffani
Thank you so much, Mister Lion! You're the best in the whole world!
lyon
Ahahaha, oh, hardly...
(Tiffani leaves.)
lyon
(frowns) ......
No, Tiffani. That is not true.

[Tiffani & Lyon gain C-rank support with each other.]

Riev & Saaga

saaga
You...! The heretic Riev!
riev
Heh heh heh... Mansel's court troubadour.
How strange it is to find you so far from the holy land.
Here all alone, with nobody to hear your screams...
Heh heh heh...
saaga
Do not threaten me, you disgusting creature.
I understand you better now, you know.
riev
Oh, do you?
Did your turn come to land in Mansel's black book of shame?
saaga
Hmph! Not quite.
I told a number of truths to the revered princess, that damned L'Brat..
She was inflamed by my words, and decided on the spot to leave on a trip.
Something about "fighting for justice" and "vanquishing the forces of evil."
Next thing I knew, her dear uncle the pontifex was sending me after her!
As if a court troubadour hasn't better things to do than play babysitter!
riev
Yes, your job was oh so difficult, as I recall.
I understand being upset by the concept of real work.
saaga
Can it. As if you were any better, Riev.
As if any of them were!
riev
Heh heh heh... How you hurry to level the playing field.
Very well. I concede defeat. So, what comes next for you?
saaga
I've already spoken with one of yours.
I shall be granting you my aid.
riev
You did have some degree of competence with staves.
The prince could use some aid on that front.
(smirks) I suppose there's no harm in letting you trot along.
Heh heh heh...

Joshua

Combat

joshua
Let's see how lucky you are, shall we?

Combat w/ Caellach

joshua
Well, well. Look who it is.
caellach
Hey there, Joshua. Long time no see.
joshua
Just a few days, if I remember right.
You were in town, weren't you?
You tried to avoid me, but...
Yeah, I saw you. Sorry.
caellach
Ah, don't take it personally.
I can't be seen with your likes now.
I am a general of Grado. I'm moving up in the world.
joshua
Yes, too important to mingle with the peasantry, eh?
Heh. That's rather ironic...

You're still obsessed with getting that crown, right?

caellach
Yeah... And, sorry to say, you're in my way.
Don't hate me for what I'm about to do, now.
joshua
I won't hold a grudge if you won't.

Death

joshua
(smiles) I... I guess my luck finally ran out... Heh.

Defeat by Caellach

joshua
Oogh... Guess...you win this time, Caellach...
caellach
Heh... Don't worry.
I'm not letting you off the hook that easy.
joshua
What...? What are you up to, Cae-- Urghh!
(closes eyes)
caellach
Shh. Night night, old pal...

Locations

Southeastern House

tethys
(smiling) Oh, hello. Did you come to see me dance?
I'm sorry, but I just finished a few moments ago.

(frowns) Oh... You're a Grado soldier, right?
You should be on your way.
You folks aren't welcome here anymore.

visitor
...!
tethys
Well, it's only a suggestion. It's your funeral, honey.
I, for one, will take my own advice and leave now.
I hope you'll stop walking down this dark road...
Before the darkness swallows you whole.
(Tethys leaves.)
visitor
......

...She left something behind...

(The visitor receives a Dragonshield.)

Eastern House

man
Life in Serafew's been harder since the Grado occupation force took over here.
Serafew's got Renais citizens as well as Grado, but it's been hardest on us.
They've singled out families from Renais for the most awful atrocities.

...What, that sword?
Are you blind? It's a hammer, you dunce!
It'll crush even the strongest armor-- And the skull under!
If I give it to you, will you use it to strike down that blackheart, Saar?
Of course you will. You look like a decent person.
No decent person would take that knave's side!

...Say, who are you?

(The visitor receives a Hammer.)

Central House

Default

old man
In my youth, I was a knight of some renown, I'll have you know.
I've even crossed blades with one of Grado's most famous generals, I have.

Alas, I am old now. All I can do to defend my home from you now is...
Bribe you! Here, take this extremely valuable book and get out.
Hope you choke on it.

If Duessel is visiting

old man
Huh...? Could it be...?
duessel
Do you know me?
old man
...General Duessel...!
I suppose you might not recall, but we crossed blades, once.
duessel
Hmm... I think... Yes, it's coming back to me now.
Sir Barnhardt of Renais, correct?
old man
(smiles) It gladdens me that you remember, General.
I will never forget that tournament. It was perhaps the best bout of my life.
duessel
(smiles) You were a worthy opponent, sir, and a worthier knight still.
old man
Please, please... I'm just a frail old fool now.
(frowns) But tell me, General... What has happened?
Why are you commandeering Grado's troops to commit these atrocities?
duessel
......
Be that I knew, myself. Alas, all I do is stumble blindly in the darkness.
I, too, am naught but an old fool now...
old man
...Have heart, General.
A new sun will rise, shining light on this dark night.
duessel
......
old man
Take this before you leave.
I wished to pass down all I know about battle before I died...
It's all written here. Please, I want you to have it.
From one proud has-been to another...
duessel
Thank you, Sir Barnhardt. Please, stay well.
old man
You as well...
(Duessel leaves.)
old man
For you might just be the one to bring Grado the change it needs...

(The visitor receives a Secret Book.)

Saaga's House

Default

saaga
Hmm? Who might you be?

Grado?! Leave this house! They'll think I'm with you...!
Although... On second though... Hmmm...
Yes, that might just not be such a terrible thing.
You see, I used to hold a high position in Rausten's court...
But then, I told a number of truths to its revered princess.

Fine, then. If that's the way it is, then I wash my hands of them all!
This means I'm in need of a new job. I am a rather talented healer.
I'm sure you could use more of those, hmm? Of course you could.
(smiles) Believe me, this arrangement will prove mutually beneficial. Hahaha...

If Riev is visiting

saaga
You...! The heretic Riev!
riev
Heh heh heh... Mansel's court troubadour.
How strange it is to find you so far from the holy land.
Here all alone, with nobody to hear your screams...
Heh heh heh...

The prince could use some aid on that front.
(smirks) I suppose there's no harm in letting you trot along.
Heh heh heh...
saaga
I will make sure this deal proves mutually beneficial. Hahahahaha!

Ending

If Saar survived

lyon
Captain! Are you all right?
(Saar jumps.)
saar
Prince Lyon... I take full responsibility!
Punish me for my failure as you see fit...
lyon
Rise, Captain.
You may redeem yourself by fighting for me directly.
saar
What? But then, who'll keep the border secure?
lyon
...No problem. Riev!
riev
My prince?
lyon
...I think we'll have some of your personal troops handle this.
riev
Heh heh heh... Are you certain, my prince?
lyon
Yes...
riev
(grins) Heh heh heh... Excellent, excellent!
saar
Ah, I should have known you'd have men ready for this eventuality!
It is an honor beyond words to join the royal guard, my prince!
lyon
I expect you to do your best.
My first order is this: Round up the remaining mercenaries.
saar
Understood! Do I have permission to execute them?
lyon
...Go ahead.
(Saar salutes.)
saar
(smiles) Grado's will be done!
lyon
......

If Saar died

(Lyon finds Saar's body.)
lyon
......
riev
(smirks) Heh heh heh... He's breathed his last.
Such a shame, is it not?
lyon
...I suppose so.
riev
(frowns) With him gone, nobody remains to protect the border.
lyon
...I think we can leave that to your personal troops.
riev
Heh heh heh... Are you certain, my prince?
lyon
Yes...
riev
(grins) Heh heh heh... Excellent, excellent!
(Riev summons fiends to cover the town.)
lyon
Very well. We are done here.
riev
(smirks) Heh heh heh... I pray that was a wise move.
You will have to explain this, my prince...
lyon
I know that. Simply let me do the talking.
(Riev and Lyon approach the other generals.)
duessel
P-Prince Lyon! What is happening?!
Serafew is crawling with... abominations!
We have to destroy them before they attack the--
lyon
They will not attack anybody. Or at least, not the citizens.
We summoned these creatures to defend Serafew.
(Duessel starts.)
duessel
What?!
selena
These... beings, they look much like the monsters of yore.
The monsters of the Demon King...
It's difficult enough to believe they are real-- You say you summoned them?!
lyon
This is quite sudden, I know.
This is only another effect of my research into the Sacred Stones.
duessel
B-But... Monsters! You would have fiends replace the border guard?!
It's... It's insanity, Prince! The people will never accept this foul sorcery!
lyon
Tell me something, Duessel, Selena.
If we take the Demon King's power and use it for good...
What exactly is the problem?
selena
...I suppose... There shouldn't be...
duessel
Even so...
glen
You should have been forthcoming with us from the start, Prince.
lyon
Look how you've reacted. Can you blame me for hiding it from you?
glen
...Well, I...
valter
Ahahahaha! I, for one, love this turn of events.
This is fantastic. Truly.
Our bookworm liege has the power to summon monsters!
What's next? Will you tell me you're the Demon King in disguise? Hahaha...
caellach
Sheesh... Tell me, Prince, should I be worried?
lyon
About what?
caellach
These jolly fellas taking my job away from me!
An endless source of disposable soldiers makes us humans pretty redundant.
lyon
You don't think we'd already be doing that if we could?
No, it's not that easy. It puts a great strain on...
W-Well, never mind the specifics. The point is, we can't replace the army.
caellach
Heh... Guess I'll take your word for it.
Far as I'm concerned, this isn't an issue.
And hey, it's already solved a problem for us.
valter
Yes, I was worried you'd order me to stay and watch the border.
This way, we can leave the menial tasks to these mindless husks,
and keep all the fun ones to ourselves! Genius, Prince!
lyon
Glad to have your understanding, Generals.
Duessel, Selena, Glen?
glen
...It does seem like they aren't actively hostile...
I suppose I'll have to learn to accept this.
selena
D-Does your lord father approve of this...?
lyon
Of course. He, too, has benefitted greatly from my research...
selena
......
Very well. That is that, then.
duessel
...Aye...
lyon
Thank you, Generals. I am blessed to have you all by my side.

And with that, I think we've tarried long enough.
Renvall is not too far now. Forward march, everyone!

(Lyon leaves.)
duessel
...Gods... I...
selena
Enough, Duessel.
I am shaken as well, but we are Grado's highest generals.
We must remain calm under all circumstances.
duessel
......

If all houses were visited

old man
Hold... General Duessel...
duessel
Ah...!
old man
I'm not going to question you about the fiends.
Perhaps I'm just afraid of your answer.
duessel
...Forgive me...
Forgive me for all of this.
For the invasion, for Saar's crimes and for this mess...
I apologize, from the bottom of my heart.
old man
We don't blame you, General. It is plain to see...
You are as powerless as the rest of us in this.
duessel
I shouldn't be. It's only because I am a cowardly old mongrel...
old man
Be that as it may... Please, take this.
For protecting us from the bandits.
duessel
It was only a coincidence. Our main goal was to--
old man
Yes, rescue the blackhearted Saar... Even so, you saved us.
And, frankly, the fiends look a lot less cruel than Saar!
(smiles) I'd say we're better off now. Haha...
duessel
......
old man
(serious) In all seriousness, General Duessel...
If it were anybody else, I wouldn't even have left my home.
But you, General... I feel I comprehend you at least a bit.
Please, have this, with our thanks... And our blessings.
duessel
...I believe I understand. Thank you, sir.
old man
Luck be with you, Grado's Obsidian...
(Duessel receives a Master Seal.)

If Caellach defeated Joshua

caellach
Hey, Prince! I've got a request...
lyon
Yeah?
...Wait, who is that?
(Caellach presents an unconscious Joshua.)
caellach
It's my old pal I mentioned before.
I left him alive.
lyon
Why would you do such a thing?
caellach
Haha... Call it a hunch, but I believe he'll be of use.
Might take a while, but I'm sure you'll thank me in the end.
lyon
Hmmm... What exactly do we need him to do?
caellach
Oh, just keep him alive and secure.
Might make for a great hostage down the line.
lyon
...In that case... Leave him with me.
I'll see if I can... calm him down.
caellach
......
lyon
What?
caellach
You can be a mighty scary guy when you want, Prince.
Never would've thought it, looking at you...
Well, it's not my problem. You do what you gotta do.
lyon
Don't worry. He'll live.
(Lyon leaves with Joshua.)
caellach
...Yikes. I almost feel bad now.
Sorry, Josh. But if you're who I think you are...
I can't pass up this chance.
