Endgame X: Waterfall

Objective Bring Peace

Put an end to this conflict

Opening

rosetta
This unassuming place, the Crescent... I will have nightmares of this place.
But it will not break me. I won't let my life be written off as a failure.

If Heavybread was spared

heavybread
...
rosetta
Don't scare me like that! You're alive, Heavybread?
heavybread
Shamefully, I am. I was spared by the red-haired Chief, spending the rest of the conflict in hiding, nursing my wounds.
rosetta
I did not ask you to die for me. There is no shame in self-preservation.
heavybread
True for the common man, but you sought to make me your knight, in exchange for saving my life, for which I never truly thanked you.
I could not be one, I'm nothing more than a thug, who simply got lucky.
rosetta
And here you are, luckier than the rest! I don't care about that.
I'm just glad there is a familiar face I can return home with.
heavybread
Where is home? Are you really planning to go back to the Herons?
rosetta
... I don't know. But I have this whole journey left to make a decision.
heavybread
I'll go with you, wherever that is. I have failed you once, I shall not do so again.
rosetta
Heavybread, you owe me nothing. The Lady of House Heron is no more.
heavybread
Then I will join you as a travelling companion, or even as a friend.
rosetta
I would like that.
nerysa
It started with optimising the shape of the automatons for labour.
Then to make them sturdy enough to withstand any tough condition.
Then, we thought it necessary to surpass Ulach's designs in power, just because we could.
That is how we inadvertently turned tools of peace into weapons of war.
oren
Those are perfectly valid considerations to have.
It is no fault of your own they were taken advantage of in such a way.
nerysa
I should've known how these golems would be used in Ellerie's hands.
I should've known how easily Lindros falls under the spell of his dear friend.
Instead, I marched blindly, just because the road was there to be marched on.
Because I was an Archsage, and there was magic for me to apply my expertise.
oren
It is not your responsibility to right the wrongs of others.
nerysa
I want to believe that too, but this is not some pang that will simply fade.
Crushed corpses and decimated dwellings as far as the eye can see.
Not even the Green Tide could cause the damage I saw firsthand.
I cannot possibly forget it, knowing I had a hand in facilitating it.
oren
I know this can't be an easy weight to bear, but there are surely better ways to go about fixing this.
The words of that snake, Maurice, can't be trusted.
nerysa
I do not trust Maurice.
I trust his motivations, that he wants Ellerie dead more than anyone else.
oren
Would Ellerie's death really solve everything? Why the focus on her, and not Lindros?
nerysa
Because I'm well aware of her corrupt nature.
But more importantly, because I want to believe in Lindros.
To believe the bright young man, with such hopes for the future, couldn't possibly have chosen this on his own.
Perhaps, I am again deluding myself, but it is a willing delusion.
oren
You're really committed to this.
I, just, don't want to see you put yourself in danger, Nerysa.
nerysa
I must correct my mistakes, or else I shall never sleep again.
oren
If your mind is made up, then all I can do is follow.
nerysa
Oren, this is about me, not you.
I wouldn't want you caught between your hometown and me.
oren
Did I not promise I'd prioritise you over all else?
nerysa
I know how much you love Irinde, and how much it'd hurt you if Irinde turned against you.
oren
But you also must know there is no world where I let you charge into danger alone.
nerysa
... I know what I've chosen to do will hurt you, and for that, I am deeply sorry.
oren
Nonsense. You've always shouldered my burdens.
I wish to also shoulder yours, no matter what it might cost.
unari
You know I hate gambling.
What makes you think I would agree to this?
maurice
What is a mere gamble now, compared to the inevitability of assimilation into Ellerie's kingdom?
unari
Vague conjecture is insufficient to drive me to action, Maurice.
maurice
There are many with grudges against Ellerie willing to join my cause.
Some names among them might seem familiar. Tower, Oren, Nerys-
unari
You got Oren onto this too? Even Tower?
maurice
Many of these participants are still nominally Ellerie's allies.
It will not be difficult to bypass Ellerie's meagre security, especially as scattered as it is now with clearing the monsters.
unari
I hate to admit it, but you've caught me, hook, line and sinker.
There may not be another chance to drop Ellerie off her self-made throne.
maurice
Is that agreement?
unari
I'll have to discuss it with Oren first, then I will give an answer.

Night

maurice
Brave heroes of the Crescent, it pleases me that you all gather her-
tower
This isn't about you and your petty schemes. This is about the future of the Crescent.
maurice
I understand that I am-
tower
I've long heard of your fame, Master Rosswick, yet we meet for the first time.
rosswick
Likewise, Tower, though I wish it was to share drinks and stories, not to discuss this new shadow that has fallen over the Crescent.
tower
I'll cut to the heart of the matter. Ellerie cannot be allowed to rule.
Time and time again, she profits off the conflicts she starts, even this war.
But I remind you, she shall not be satisfied with just the Crescent.
Her ambitions shall see her drag the Crescent into war with the Mainland.
For what she will do, and what she has already done, she must be stopped.
rosswick
Aye. Even in our brief meeting, I saw a fire in her eyes, separating her from the rabble.
But little did I know that fire would only months later burn Yalunzar to the ground.
unari
She played our war with the Guild to the detriment of all others.
If our alliance had beaten the Guild those months ago, all this wouldn-
tower
Oren, Nerysa, you're both nominally in Ellerie's employ.
It will be your duty to sneak in our allies past Irinde's guards.
nerysa
Blades in the dark are not my strong suit. I'll see what I can do.
oren
I do not like abusing the goodwill of my countrymen, but if I must.
tower
Many warriors are felled on a joyous occasion, while they are least cautious.
I suspect Ellerie is most vulnerable following her grandest victory yet.
Once I've found the suit-
maurice
Hold on. This is my operation.
tower
You seem to be under the mistaken assumption that your words hold weight.
maurice
You'd rather listen to Tower, the man who brought Ellerie to the Crescent?
unari
I'd trust him over some foreigner with no investment in the Crescent.
tower
We've all become deeply rooted within this land and call it home.
You, however, only stir up conflict to benefit your foreign masters.
Even Ellerie cares more for this land and its people than you do.
nerysa
Well spoken, Tower. We've not forgotten what havoc Maurice wrecked upon Irinde.
oren
If not for our temporary alliance, I'd push this log through your skull.
unari
Looks like you've lost control of the situation. The people have spoken.
maurice
This is ridiculous. I brought all you together, and now you-
rosswick
Shut up and let a real man of the land do the talking.
tower
I will address one of his concerns.
I am personally indebted to Ellerie for her efforts in saving my granddaughter.
But this is not about me. This is for the Crescent. She cannot be allowed to rule.
rosswick
I like that. For the Crescent, eh?
tower
We're not turning that into a rallying cry. This is an execution, nothing more.
maurice
(Any humiliation is acceptable, as long as I see Ellerie dead.)

If Oriana agreed to Tower's plan

tower
Oriana, you didn't say a word.
oriana
It is difficult to create much enthusiasm for treachery.
tower
But you understand this is necessary.
oriana
I do. I wish Ellerie was some malevolent stranger, and not the woman who wished me well before fighting the Tide.
tower
I do not enjoy the prospect, but that is no shield for her misdeeds.
oriana
I shall play my part when the time comes. No need to convince me.
Although, I didn't expect you to take charge like that, Tower.
tower
Maurice is known for letting others die for him while he sits in safety.
I have no desire to lead, but I won't suffer poor leadership.
oriana
But you were content to let Ellerie take the lead for captaincy.
tower
... For all her faults, Ellerie always led from the front.
I trusted her with captaincy, but not with the Crescent.

If Oriana did not agree to Tower's plan

(Ellerie, Potato, He Who Chops, and the guard captain are performing cleanup in the countryside. He Who Chops kills a war golem.)
he who chops
Another one chopped!
ellerie
Good work. Lindros really went all out on these big ones.
potato
Why do we have to come all the way out here?
Can't we just order some grunts to do this?
ellerie
You've become a little comfortable in your role as one of Irinde's commanders.
It is good for morale if the leaders are seen toiling just as much as anyone else.
potato
Well, it's not great for my morale.
ellerie
We do deserve a small break.
I hear these waterfalls were one of Yaluzar's best tourist locations.
guard
It's just water, ain't it? Why come to see more water? We have a whole coastline.
ellerie
Your life must be so devoid of joy compared to everyone else.

(Tower, Maurice, and their allies approach, including Oriana if she sided with Tower.)
maurice
Our target is within reach, with such a measly escort! This demagogue, this-
tower
Silence. Everyone, move.
(Ellerie watches from below.)
ellerie
I thought we were the only squad coming this way. Huh, that's Tower-
Wait, is that... Maurice? Oh, Elis.
guard
Maurice? The dog who fled with his tail between his legs at Irinde's might?
Why does he dare show his face here?
ellerie
That's a good question! They don't march towards us with friendly intent.
I feared... I can't believe this is happening. Well, I can, and did even consider it, but not so soon! Not so close to our victory.
How can they be so quick to turn on me?
guard
If they've really turned traitor, come one or a hundred, I will cut down every one that approaches you.
Chief. You have nothing to fear.
ellerie
Did we not have guards watching the perimeter?
How could such a force have slipped through?
guard
I thought they were all part of Oriana's crew, or other friendly adventurers!
They came through with our allies; I had no reason to suspect anything.
ellerie
I have no one to blame but myself for this carelessness.
I pray you'll be enough, Guard Captain.
he who chops
Huh? What's gotten everyone so worried?
potato
We're going to die! Chief, you've doomed us!
he who chops
We are? Isn't that our allies? Look, I see Chief Oren.
ellerie
You two better give every damn thing you got.
If they're here to kill me, they won't want witnesses.

Conversations

Ellerie vs. Oriana

ellerie
Even you, Oriana?
After all the drinks we shared, after all of our struggles?
oriana
...
ellerie
I knew you had a strong sense of justice, but I didn't think you had it in you to cut me down.
oriana
I wish it was not you, Ellerie. But I can't back down.
ellerie
Even if you know that this will hurt Krynia, regardless of the result?
oriana
I've made my choice.
ellerie
Then I see there's nothing that can change your mind.
Let's get to it.

Ellerie vs. Tower

tower
There's nothing more to say. Draw your weapon, Ellerie.
ellerie
How very much like you.
I had a whole emotional speech and everything.

Ellerie vs. Maurice

ellerie
I have to commend you.
I thought your threat had been long neutralised, but here you are, having turned my allies against me.
maurice
You planted the seeds of your own downfall, Ellerie.
ellerie
Why are you truly so desperate to see me dead, I wonder?
Is it really out of loyalty to pursue me all this way?
Is it truly your wife's death, when you yourself let her die to further your own career?
maurice
I have a thousand and one reasons to see you dead.
Why bother with specifics?
ellerie
Because I wager the specific reason is much more pathetic.
You couldn't bear being beaten by me at every turn, and that even my downfall was not your doing.
Your crippling inferiority drove you here, to score just one victory.
maurice
You can holler all you'd like, but at last, I have you cornered.
Only the final victory is the one that matters.
ellerie
Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
You may find a nasty surprise in one of these eggs.

Ellerie vs. Unari

ellerie
I knew you'd be trouble eventually, but you really got a head start on me.
unari
Still too long a wait for me to see every Frostfire avenged.
ellerie
We could've come to a reasonable agreement.
I had no reason to take Frosthaven away from you.
unari
I'd rather not live at the mercy of an egoistic despot, and the Crescent will agree with me.
ellerie
There's no Crescent in your consideration.
Only preserving some tiny scrap of power.
unari
That is fair condemnation, if it was from anyone except you.

Ellerie vs. Oren

ellerie
Chief Oren. I do admit, usurping your position weighed heavily on me, after you gave us nothing but help.
oren
I was bitter, but time wore away that grudge.
No matter your methods, you did push Irinde to its greatest height.
ellerie
Truly? I did wish to make it up to you, but given you're trying to kill me, I say we call it even.
You are aware my death could collapse Irinde?
oren
That is no longer my concern. I've given enough for Irinde.
Now, I only fight for another.
ellerie
Nerysa is lucky to have you.
I'm a little less pleased about the outcome though.

Ellerie vs. Nerysa

ellerie
You were supposed to be a well-learned, scholarly woman.
Irinde must have rubbed off on you, to immediately settle your grudge with violence.
nerysa
That is the only language you speak. Even if I am not fluent, I shall endeavour to learn.
You turned the tools of creation into destruction, stained my hands with blood.
ellerie
I'd respect you more if your anger was about the victims, but it seems you only care about your own conscience.
nerysa
I don't believe you'd know anything about a conscience.
ellerie
I weighed up the lives of my own people against the enemy.
I am not guilt-free, but I did what I thought best.
nerysa
Such a decision should be condemned in any circumstance.
ellerie
I wonder if you'd think that, if you had to bury Irinde's volunteers beneath the walls.
I wonder if you'd care if it hadn't been your precious work.
nerysa
Enough of this. You can sling your accusations in the beyond.

Oren vs. Guard

guard
Why turn against Irinde, Chief?
After you've worked so hard to protect it from the Guild.
oren
You truly are the perfect soldier. I pity you.
guard
What?

Rosswick vs. Guard

guard
Master Rosswick! It's me, the eleventh seat!
rosswick
Hmm? Ah, yes, the one who never said anything.
guard
I used to be too intimidated to ask questions.
I just wanted to thank you for being such a good teacher.
rosswick
I can't say it doesn't delight me to hear that, but ah, you seem to be on the wrong side of this conflict.
guard
Well, wrong seems a little uncharitable.
rosswick
I didn't teach you to use your lance to aid evil.
guard
Yeah, this isn't going anywhere. Sorry, Master. Here I come.

Ellerie Defeat

ellerie
I've taken so many gambles, yet this is my undoing?
Blades in the back as I admire the beauty of the Crescent?

Maurice Death

maurice
This time, I gave my all. No slipping away...

Tower Defeat

tower
...
Well done, Ellerie.

Unari Death

unari
Curse you, Ellerie...
If you had never come to the Crescent...
If...

Oren Death

oren
Did all this come about because of my mistakes?
Was I ever worthy of leading Irinde?

Nerysa Death

nerysa
Devoured by the beast I willingly fed.
I deserve this, but Oren... I shouldn't have let you come.

Guard Death

guard
Glory to Irinde! I die in Irinde's name!

Rosswick Death

rosswick
I thought I'd be one of the few adventurers to retire, dying peacefully in bed, surrounded by friends.
Funny how things work out.

Ellerie vs. Dreadlich III

ellerie
Who in the name of Elis are you?
I know you've been stalking us. Speak!
dreadlich iii
I'm just a lost traveller on the journey of life.
ellerie
At least have a better excuse.
I saw how the Crescent's creatures never attacked you.
And now you're conveniently here, at my weakest.
dreadlich iii
My mask just keeps me safe. All there's to it. Can I go now?
I don't want to be here.
ellerie
Fine, take your secrets to the afterlife!
dreadlich iii
Aaaaahh!

Character Descriptions

Ellerie (Ellerie POV)
Yours truly, a former bureaucrat, now Chieftain of Irinde and soon, most of the Crescent. I refuse to fall here.

Wisp (Ellerie POV)
Why do I feel so melancholic? Is it a fear of impending death?

Guard (Ellerie POV)
A soldier from Irinde who fights for Irinde. I could not ask for anyone more capable to stand with me.

He Who Chops (Ellerie POV)
Doesn't speak much, doesn't ask a lot of questions and follows orders to the letter. My favourite kind of underling.

Potato (Ellerie POV)
I only promoted him because I knew him, but he turned out to be quite suited to leadership. And corruption.

Maurice (Ellerie POV)
Maurice, Maurice, Maurice. Nothing will save you from my wrath, not these former allies you've turned.

Tower (Ellerie POV)
Tower... Should I have done something different? Should I have had you killed when the opportunity arose? Should I?

Oren (Ellerie POV)
I let you go from your position peacefully. I never wanted you harmed. But looks like the feeling is no longer mutual.

Nerysa (Ellerie POV)
Nerysa, you snake. I knew you did not like me, but I thought you better than to attempt assassination.

Unari (Ellerie POV)
I knew this treachery would come sooner or later, but right now? Right after my greatest victory?

Rosswick (Ellerie POV)
Your place is in the past, you miserable old sack of bones.

Meat Man (Ellerie POV)
Who?

Fate Frier (Ellerie POV)
You won't be meeting with a good fate, that's for sure.

Oriana (Oriana POV)
I am doing the right thing. For the Cerulean Crescent. For everyone. But is it the right thing for me?

Ellerie (Oriana POV)
I never intended things to go this far. I don't want this to be how it all ends.

Wisp (Oriana POV)
Is there someone there?

Guard (Oriana POV)
More monster than woman. I didn't know a mere human could become so mighty. Regardless, she will fall against so many.

He Who Chops (Oriana POV)
A poor fool who has to die for Ellerie's sake.

Potato (Oriana POV)
This man always gave me an odd feeling. I don't mean to discriminate, but I suspect I will not mourn him.

Maurice (Oriana POV)
He has a gleeful look upon his delightfully stabbable face.

Tower (Oriana POV)
Tower seems to feel none of the hesitation I do, but I suspect his heart also isn't quite in it.

Oren (Oriana POV)
Are your actions as altruistic as they claim, Oren? Is it truly not personal resentment that leads you here?

Nerysa (Oriana POV)
She probably wants to make up for what the creatures did, partially by her work. I wonder what Lindros feels right now.

Unari (Oriana POV)
She feels no love for Ellerie, that much is certain. To her, a heavy weight is being lifted over her town.

Rosswick (Oriana POV)
I know little about this man allegedly famous back in his day. All I know is that he shall help us slay her.

Meat Man (Oriana POV)
I remember buying some skewers from him. He has lost everything.

Fate Frier (Oriana POV)
Even the street vendors hold a grudge that cannot be resolved with anything except bloodshed.

Frostfires
An adventuring band that made their fortune pillaging artifacts in the White Wastes. Not immune to fire or the cold.

The Guild
Various merchants and artisans that make up the bulk of the Guild. Say what you will, their skill is undeniable.

Cormorants
An established adventuring band whose battle cry is always “fighting for freedom” even when it makes no sense.

Saltsworn
One of the biggest adventuring guilds on the Crescent. Trades quality for quantity.

Glade Gallant
The Iron Prince's mounted division and most trusted fighters. Maintaining the mounts necessary is becoming very costly.

Disciple
Extremists of the Disciples of Elis out to serve 'divine will' or some nonsense.

Dreadlich III
A perfectly average traveller on the Crescent. They have a very interesting choice of headwear.

Ellerie Ending

ellerie
I'm sorry.
tower
What do you have to be sorry for? I was the aggressor.
ellerie
For my wrongdoings leading us here. For not being the person you wanted me to be.
tower
You do have a lot to be sorry for.
ellerie
...
tower
Don't you make that face. You knew this day would come.
ellerie
No, I did not. I wanted to explain myself to you and Oriana first.
You didn't give me the chance.
tower
There's nothing to explain.
ellerie
I had to end the siege. We were bleeding troops against their walls. It was either-
tower
And your invitation to House Heron? Did you have to do that too?
ellerie
I...
tower
I'm not spending my last moments listening to you whine.
Don't tell Krynia how I died.
She does not need to know what will hurt her.
ellerie
It would've been in my interests anyways.
tower
Then I can rest.

(Tower dies.)

guard
Archsage, Chief Oren, this is not the end you deserve. I know they worked tirelessly,
furthering Irinde's interests, all those years.
ellerie
Despite our differences, I recognise that they were truly noble souls.
guard
Allow me to bury them with honour. They should not get a traitors' burial.
ellerie
Of course they do not. What transpired here was a plot of Maurice and Unari.
It is a tragedy that the good Chief and Archsage were unexpectedly caught in it.
guard
Is that how you want the story told?
ellerie
There will be no talk of treachery. They would never betray Irinde.
guard
Then it will be done.
ellerie
One more thing. Chop Maurice's body into a thousand pieces and feed it to the dogs.
(Dune watches from afar.)
dune
... Poor Oren. If you had succeeded, it'd be two obstacles gone. But I am not so lucky.
krynia
Grandfather was invincible. How could he die to some common rabble?
oriana
No one is invincible, Krynia. Always treasure the family you have now, because you never know when the worst might happen on the Crescent.
krynia
I thought when I'd become rich and powerful, I could really thank him.
Maybe build him a mansion, or something. I'll never get that chance now...
oriana
You know Tower wouldn't care for that. The best thing you can do is live happily.
That would bring him joy like nothing else.
krynia
That's not enough. Nothing can be enough to repay him.
(Krynia leaves.)
oriana
...
(Ellerie approaches.)
ellerie
I'm sorry. The Crescent lost a great man, and a great grandfather.
oriana
Are you sorry in a general sense, or something more than that?
ellerie
There's no point in lying to you.
oriana
... He was discontent. Not just with you, but with how his life had turned out.
I should've known he'd do something drastic. I should've known to stop him.
ellerie
Once Tower makes up his mind, no one could stop him. Not even you.
I hold no grudge against him for that, though I pray you'll forgive me.
oriana
I can't truly forgive you, Ellerie. At its roots, this was all your doing.
ellerie
House Heron would've invaded eventually. By encouraging them to come unprepared, I truly believe I've ensured a better outcome for the whole Crescent.
oriana
When was it ever up to you to gamble with the lives of everyone on this land, just because you claim you know best?
You and Rosetta, you're not so unalike. Was this all truly good for the Crescent, or did you convince yourself it was?
ellerie
What does it matter, if the outcome is the same?
oriana
I want you to ask yourself if you can keep up that excuse for all your decisions.
ellerie
... Oriana, do you regret protecting that defenceless young woman from those thugs, near those rotting docks, those years ago?
oriana
What kind of question is that, Ellerie?
ellerie
I just wanted to ask.
oriana
I would never regret saving a stranger. Is that what you want to hear?
ellerie
That is all. Goodbye, Oriana. May you live happily.
girl
I overheard Mother saying that you were this super deadly adventurer!
boy
You were holding out on us! You never told us about this.
mince
(frowns) It wasn't important. That was all a very long time ago.
girl
That was only a few years ago!
mince
(smiles) Did you exist a few years ago?
girl
Well, no.
mince
Then it's a long time ago.
boy
That's not important. You must have killed a lot of people, right?
girl
Fought a lot of really dangerous monsters?
mince
It wasn't exciting at all. Nothing you kids would be interested in.
girl
Really?
mince
Yes, really. I just did some cooking and washed the pots. Nothing else.
boy
That's lame. I heard adventurers were super violent deadly killers?
mince
What people say about adventurers is very exaggerated. Now, how about an apple pie?

Years later...

(Ellerie loads soldiers and war golems onto a ship.)

If He Who Chops survived

he who chops
Do you think we'll be home in time for my birthday?
potato
For your birthday? It'll be years before we even see home!
he who chops
Really? I thought she meant years as in, figuratively. Nothing takes years.
potato
Chops. You really have no idea what you've signed up for.
he who chops
Not really. I don't get why everyone is so enthusiastic.
Why are we going over there, when the Crescent is fine?
potato
Let's put it this way. If you had a small tomato farm,
and your neighbour's was ten times the size, would you be satisfied?
he who chops
I'd be pretty satisfied. I can live off a small tomato farm. Less work.
potato
You wouldn't survive the great tomato conflict. Let's just go.
(They climb aboard.)
oriana
It fills me with pride that you've really made something of yourself, but to go across the ocean?
I still think of you as my little girl.
I'm not ready to see you go.
krynia
Ready or not, you can't keep coming to my rescue every time something happens.
oriana
I don't doubt I could, as silly as that is.
krynia
I don't need it anymore. Anyone who gets in my way, I can turn to ash with ease.
oriana
... I wish you'd rely on the Blessing less often, Krynia.
krynia
You worry too much. Speaking of which, Mother, please, stop spending all of your time fruitlessly researching the Blessing.
oriana
I thought I was pretty secretive about it.
krynia
It's quite easy to figure out considering what tomes you've been leaving about.
I thought we resolved the issue years ago, why are you still obssessed with it?
oriana
If there's any returning trace of the madness, then-
krynia
Then my time would have arrived!
I've already lived a far more interesting life than that sickly young girl could imagine, so what if my life is a little shorter?
oriana
If there is some other thread out there, I don't want to have missed it.
krynia
You and Grandfather already went through everything under the sun.
You've spent far too much of your life living for me. Please, live for yourself.
I know adventuring is essentially extinct, but there's so much more out there.
oriana
I was not expecting to be on the receiving end of a lecture from my daughter.
krynia
I'm sure if Grandfather was here with us, he'd tell you the same!
I shouldn't delay our departure any longer. Keep well, Mother!
Maybe take up soapmaking, or something!
(Krynia leaves.)
oriana
Why soapmaking?
(On the ship, Ellerie muses to herself.)
ellerie
The Crescent has truly been a blessing. In so few years, I have it all. Land, power,
wealth, an army at my beck and call.
Princess, you might be disgusted by my methods, but that is who I am.
You believed that I only fought for your ambitions, but it was always my own desire.
(Krynia boards the ship.)
krynia
Chief! I'm ready!
ellerie
Say your goodbyes to your mother?
krynia
For like the seventeenth time, yes.
ellerie
I was willing to leave you in charge of the Crescent as its primary governor.
You did not need to embark on this undoubtedly harsh and messy expedition.
krynia
The Crescent isn't enough for me anymore.
I know the Mainland is where history shall be rewritten, and that's where I want to be.
ellerie
You're a woman after my own heart. You're destined for great things.
(Pomelo and Lindros talk at the shore.)
lindros
Is there nothing I can say to convince you to come with me?
pomelo
You know I have little desire to aid in Ellerie's plans or go to the Mainland.
The Crescent is my home.
lindros
I wish I could say the same, Pom.
Only through practical application and refinement can I improve my art, and for that, Ellerie's expedition to the Mainland is where I must go.
pomelo
You seek out war, Lindros.
lindros
This is the price of progress.
pomelo
Then I must send you off. But Lindros, if there's one thing to remember, don't let anyone second your decision.
You're smart, the smartest man I know.
lindros
Alright, Pom, but what's that about? Do I look like someone so easily swayed?
pomelo
You kind of do, Lin.
lindros
Only by you.
pomelo
You flatterer. I shall be here waiting for your return. Don't forget to send letters.
lindros
They'll be some very detailed letters, so much that you'll be sick of receiving them.
(Lindros boards the ship. Pomelo goes to leave, but runs into Oriana.)
pomelo
Quartermaster! It's been a while.
oriana
I haven't been a quartermaster in years, but good to see you too, Pom.
pomelo
I knew you'd be here to see off Krynia.
That makes the two of us losing a loved one to that darned Ellerie.
oriana
It's not my place to curtail Krynia's ambitions, even if I... don't fully approve.
I imagine you feel the same for Lindros.
pomelo
Yeah. I love him, but the guy... The old Lin would've baulked at what he does now.
But I can only love him for who he is.
oriana
If we truly desired it, there's nothing truly stopping us from joining them.
But we don't. I imagine our hesitancy arises for quite similar reasons.
pomelo
We know what this expedition represents.
But enough of that, this is supposed to be a happy day. We will see them again.
(Mince approaches.)
mince
Hey! I almost missed you two. Good to see you're still in top shape, Pom.
And Quartermaster? I felt like I haven't seen you in months, even though you live only about a few hundred metres away.
pomelo
See, I'm not the only one trapped in the past.
oriana
I have been cooped up indoors a lot recently.
mince
Ellerie was still asking about your health, you know. Do you still refuse to see her?
oriana
I should be flattered that I'm still on her mind, but some wounds don't heal.
mince
It's not my place to pry.
Want to get a bite at my restaurant? We're half-off to celebrate the departure.
pomelo
I'm all for it. Nothing tastes better than a discount.
Quartermaster, surely you join us as well. We've missed you.
oriana
It's rather ridiculous, but I want to see their boat safely depart, as if that has good tidings for their whole journey.
mince
You're not coming?
oriana
I will join you two in a short while.
mince
That's more like it.
Give me your order now, and I'll see to it you get it warm when you arrive.
oriana
I don't know, just a porridge.
mince
Just a porridge? Come on, that's not what you want.
Look, how about I decide. Trust me, you'll love it.
pomelo
You have the moral high ground to not pay for it if you don't. It's a winning situation.
oriana
I'm sure you know best, Mince.
mince
Of course. That goes without saying.
(Mince leaves.)
pomelo
It's a cold day. Don't catch a chill sitting in the wind, Quartermaster.
(Pomelo leaves.)
oriana
The Crescent is unified. The Green Tides are no more. In due time, the dangers of the wilderness will be pulled out by adventurers.
This was a future I could scarcely imagine, and yet, I am... Our youths cross the oceans, staking a claim on foreign lands.
The shadow of the red-haired queen is ever present, even in her absence. Only Elis knows how long this fragile peace can last.
Tower, is this a Crescent you're satisfied with? It is surely better than how it used to be, and that should be enough, right?

Tower Ending

ellerie
I'm really going to die here, after everything I've survived. How... How unbelievable.
I assumed I would eventually die in grand battle, not to knives in some remote corner.
maurice
This is righteous retribution. For every life you've ruined on your grabs for power.
ellerie
Oriana, Tower, I've always respected you. Given all that we've been through together,
may you entertain one last request from this dying woman? From an old friend?
tower
I will hear it.
ellerie
Kill Maurice.
maurice
Your poisoned tongue can no longer do you any good, Ellerie.
This feud is finally at an end.

(Tower kills Maurice.)

maurice
Were you not... a man of honour?
tower
I made no promise that needed to be honoured.

(Maurice dies.)

ellerie
Thank you. I don't think I could rest if that mongrel outlived me.
Oriana, you saved me. You brought me to the Crescent.
It would be poetic if you'd finish the deed yourself.
oriana
I won't forget what you've done for Krynia, for us. May Elis forgive my betrayal.
ellerie
You were only being true to yourself. At least make it as quick as possible.
(Oriana kills Ellerie. Dune, watching from the cliffs, suddenly takes flight towards Irinde.)
unari
Dune! She's been watching the entire time, doing nothing! No doubt,
the whole Crescent will know, and here I hoped we might leave no witnesses.
tower
There was no chance an assassination of this scale could've possibly gone undetected.
unari
Regardless, the figure who cast such a shadow over the Crescent has truly fallen.
Captain Oriana, Tower, you're heroes to the Crescent. Frosthaven will welcome you.
oriana
I will decline your offer. I have little interest in contributing to your petty ambitions.
tower
We are leaving the Crescent, immediately. I wonder if you'll survive the turmoil.
oriana
Should we not at least go to Krynia before we leave?
tower
What will you say to her? We just slew your idol and sabotaged your future?
oriana
But surely, we can't just simply disappear from her life.
tower
Our own hides are about to be tanned by the full force of Ellerie's allies.
oriana
... We'd only be dragging her into more danger.
(Tower and Oriana leave.)
unari
Oren, Archsage, surely you plan to wrestle Irinde away from Dune.
oren
If she desires that position so much, she can have it.
unari
Are you willing to let all your hard work be claimed by vultures?
nerysa
It was always our decision to leave.
There is little more to gain from a town which has decidedly chosen another.
oren
We owe Irinde nothing more. A word of warning from a friend.
It is not too late to leave a sinking ship, even if you built it yourself.
unari
I can only wish you two safety in you travels.
(Oren and Nerysa leave.)
unari
I can't possibly abandon all I've worked for. What shall become of Frosthaven?
Shall Ellerie's allies devour each other with her death, or have I sped up our demise?
I've made my bed, now I must lie in it.

Irinde

mince
(serious) You were supposed to come to dinner, Ellerie. I made such a good stew.
I had so much to tell you. ...
Would things be different if I had told her about Maurice?
Was it my neglect that caused this?
(Dune is making a speech and has gathered a crowd.)
pomelo
Stay back, Lin. This looks bad.
lindros
Ellerie's yet to even be buried, and they're already stirring up a mess?
krynia
Is this true? This can't be.
mince
(serious) I don't want to believe it, but they've already fled from the Crescent.
lindros
... They killed Ellerie, for what I did?
krynia
Would they do such a thing? Mother and Ellerie were always on good terms, right?
I know Grandfather was disgruntled, but-
dune
What senseless tragedy! Our heroic Chieftain, struck down by turncoats and conspirators, while protecting the Crescent from harm!
These villains include our very own Oren and Nerysa, who were undoubtedly taken by envy.
There was also Unari from Frosthaven, who we all know to be a foe from the last war.
But even more tragically, the Chieftain was betrayed by two of her own companions!
The famed Tower and Oriana, whose daughter is perfectly placed to exploit Ellerie's trust.
krynia
Are you suggesting I had a hand in this?
Ellerie's always treated me so well, why would I have reason to see her dead?
dune
The guilty are quick to claim lack of motive, but this is as clear as day.
Everyone knows you were the Chief's chosen successor.
lindros
While Krynia was Ellerie's favoured, she was not in a position to seize power without her.
You, on the other hand, seem to be taking significant advantage of Ellerie's passing.
dune
Would you trust the words of the man whose incompetence caused Yalunzar's massacre?
The aftermath of which is what put the Chief in danger? This reeks of conspiracy.
pomelo
Don't you slander my man like that. You were at the Tide, you know nothing about this.
All I see is that you intended to use us as scapegoats, for your own ambition!
mince
(serious) Preach all you want, but leave Krynia out of this.
She is nothing but a victim.
krynia
Thank you for having my back, everyone!
dune
Do not listen to their words! They are foreign to Irinde, they are not our people!
mince
How can you say that, after what we've done for Irinde?
krynia
My mother was born here, you helmeted freak!
dune
Irinde, will we let this injustice stand? Can we let these turncoats go unpunished?
(Krynia begins to transform.)
krynia
Is it me you want, Dune? Then you can have me, in all my glory!
(Krynia finishes transforming and roars.)
krynia
You love your traditions, don't you, Irinde old blood?
How about the oldest tradition of all? We settle this in blood.
dune
People of Irinde, we must stand together against this monster! Glory to Irinde!
krynia
I'm not seeing enthusiasm for that call to action. Let's see how old your blood really is.
(Krynia rushes at Dune and burns her alive.)
krynia
Is there anyone else who wishes to challenge my legitimacy?
Anyone? Please, speak up!
The Chief always told me to be open to the words of the people!
...
...
Well? Then I can only assume the matter is settled.

(Krynia untransforms.)

Mother, Grandfather, why? Why did you have to do this?
Why did you kill her? Why did you put me into this position?

oren
It's only really hitting me now, that I can never return home.
That place which raised me, which made me who I am.
nerysa
I was not born of Irinde, yet I feel a similar ache. So many years of effort.
I wanted to turn that town into something great. I forced you into this decision.
oren
I do not regret anything, Nerysa, because we are together.
nerysa
Even now, now that we've cut off our roots, and are adrift with no destination in mind?
oren
(smiles) The world is a vast place, and we're lucky enough to be two people with skills that'll let us prosper where we please.
nerysa
(smiles) I am an Archsage, after all. And you... You'll make a good woodcutter.
oren
Of course. Maybe even a cart puller on a good day.
nerysa
I have no particular direction in mind, the only limiting factor being a place we can reach before our food runs out.
oren
How about, I don't know, the Wasteland City States?
I hear they have the finest baked chicken in the world.
nerysa
That's such a terrible reason. Let's go there.

Years later...

(Krynia interrogates a captured soldier.)
krynia
Really. Poisoning the water? Who put you up to this task?
soldier
I have nothing to say to you, dragonfiend! Long live the Coastal Coalition!
krynia
I suppose that answers that. You can join all your friends in the ash box.
(Krynia kills him.)
krynia
I need to remember to do this outside. Now there's a mess all over the floor.
mince
It was pure luck that I was passing by the kitchen when he decided to act.
krynia
The Coastal Coalition already died with a whimper years ago.
Dragging around the name of a corpse, how fitting.
These rebels are already one foot in the grave.
mince
I can only hope these days of sleeping with one eye open shall end eventually.
krynia
Mince, why are you still here?
mince
What do you mean by that?
krynia
I know you have a distaste for how I've kept control of the Crescent.
That your heart is no longer in it.
I remember how much you loved what you do, but there is no such spark here.
mince
What kind of person would I be to back down at the sign of hardship?
Someone has to keep this place safe.
krynia
But not you. I'm not Ellerie, Mince. And even if I was, you owe her nothing.
mince
(frowns) It's not that.
krynia
Then is it because I'm Oriana's daughter? Or Ellerie's protege?
That you feel the need to aid an old friend's charge?
mince
No.
krynia
Then what is it about? What makes you continue to fill this role which you so dislike?
mince
...
krynia
Mince, I'm dismissing you from your position.
mince
What? Huh?
krynia
You deserve better than this cesspool that is this civil war.
Please, go live a better life.
mince
... I will, Krynia. I will pray for your continued good health.
(Mince leaves.)
krynia
Pray? When did he become a follower? (closes eyes) ...
...
...
Argh, again, another headache.
(opens eyes) Ellerie only ever taught me how to conquer, but not how to rule.
Can I ever truly rule the Crescent?
No, I can't doubt myself. I will succeed.
pomelo
I've always daydreamed about a humble home far from civilization, away from the struggles of society, and simply living off the land.
I can't believe we're actually doing it.
lindros
Neither of us know a tidbit about farming.
pomelo
Figuratively living off the land. We can just buy food.
Alone to pursue whatever we desire, backed by the vast amounts of wealth we built up.
lindros
What if we are to run out of gold?
pomelo
Then we shall starve together.
Either that, or we could just go back to our usual trade.
lindros
I feel like expectations and reality have gotten a little murky here.
pomelo
I call it adapting to circumstances.
I do feel a little guilty leaving Krynia and Irinde behind, but it's for the best.
lindros
I wonder where Oriana and Tower are, whether they'll come back.
Do they even still live? We haven't heard anything about them for years.
pomelo
Between the two of them, there's nothing in the world that can take them down.
They'll return to see Krynia, one day.
lindros
Part of me thinks I should hate them, for killing my friend, for cutting short my ambitions. But I can't bring myself to.
pomelo
They must have believed they were doing the right thing.
I can't possibly fault them for that, even if it meant...
lindros
I know Yalunzar's destruction was the catalyst, but I've always wondered, why Ellerie? Why not me? I created the golems. I gave the command.
Tower, Oriana, the Archsage, they all know that.
pomelo
Because they know you wouldn't have done such a thing yourself.
lindros
It is wrong to attribute it all to Ellerie, when I made the decision.
Do they really believe that I'm a better person than I really am?
Or that Ellerie's hold is so absolute, that my choice was illusionary?
pomelo
I don't know what they believe, but I fully believe you'd never have decided that if not for Ellerie.
All that you talked about regarding your ideals, they weren't for nothing.
lindros
... I don't know, Pom. But if I had said no, Ellerie would not have forced the matter.
pomelo
I don't know what to think about Ellerie.
The cynical part says she only used us, but I would rather believe our friendship was something more genuine than that.
lindros
I want to believe in the latter, as I can only remember the good she has done for me.
If only I had just refused. Could we have still won the war regardless, without Yalunzar's destruction? Would Ellerie still be Chief, and Oriana and-
pomelo
Being fixated on the possibilities that never were will only bring you pain.
Despite everything, we've got a good life to look forward to in the present.
lindros
But I don't know if that's something I deserve to have.
pomelo
No one can tell you what you do and don't deserve, Lin. Let's just live.

Frosthaven

frostfire
Commander. Irinde's forces sighted, a day's march from our east border.
unari
Another move from Krynia, and so soon? Too soon, to her own detriment.
Enan is about to rebel, and the Iron Realms still desire independence.
frostfire
That's great, but if an angry dragon toasts Frosthaven now, these rumoured allies are not going to mean very much.
unari
Rather sharp words, but true.
Where's your chess buddy? I have not seen him around.
frostfire
Killed by a landboat cannon in the last skirmish, commander.
unari
Another good man lost to those awful things.
frostfire
His days were numbered after his knee injury. Went down how he wanted.
I just thank Elis they no longer have someone who can fix their airship.
unari
We wouldn't be alive to have this chat if that was still in the picture.
Enough dawdling from me. Prepare the orders. We march once again.
frostfire
On it, Commander.
(The soldier heads out.)
unari
I've protected Frosthaven from tyrants before.
I will do so once again.
No matter the cost.

Elsewhere

oriana
Rejoice, citizens! Here is the head of your oppressor!
No more shall his cruel and unjust laws plague this land!
(A crowd cheers.)
hero
Brave heroes! It is only through your efforts that evil has been vanquished,
and that the people might choose me as the protector of this realm.
tower
It's hardly a choice when you're the only candidate.
hero
It's about the spirit of things. What reward do you seek for your services to the realm?
A simple grant of title and land seems like insufficient acknowledgement.
oriana
We have no need for that as we are leaving this realm shortly.
hero
Truly?
tower
We did state very clearly, many times, that we'd depart at the end of this conflict.
hero
I assumed you were just being polite.
tower
When we're the reason you got the crown, we have no need to be polite.
hero
You two truly are like the heroes from a fairy tale.
Those who aid the weak, yet ask for no reward.
tower
I'm sure there's still some things you can do for us, such as getting the supplies for the next stretch of our trip.
hero
I shall see to it that you're as well supplied as you can possibly be!
(The hero leaves.)
oriana
Don't prepare too much, we only have the-
She must be overjoyed that we won't be in her way.
tower
Even though we said this over and over again.
oriana
I suppose she couldn't imagine we'd really take part in a revolution for the sake of it.
tower
I have no doubt she plans to turn our departure into some kind of festivity.
I do enjoy the occasional celebration, but not when I'm at the centre of it.
oriana
We could always slip away in the night, though I do want those supplies first.
tower
Are we continuing our journey down the east coast?
oriana
Tower, I'm thinking it's time we return to the Crescent.
tower
I'm not unopposed to this, but you have not considered returning for quite some time.
oriana
I was afraid of going back. Not because of whatever enemies we might've made, but because I didn't want to directly face Krynia and explain why we abandoned her.
If Krynia had been harmed because of what we did, I don't know if I could live with that.
tower
Indeed, I shoulder the blame for not thinking through the consequences of our decision.
But recently, Krynia, I'm sure as you've heard, has been thriving in recent years.
oriana
She's unified much of the Crescent. Almost like another Ellerie.
tower
I did not want to phrase it that way, but yes, I suppose so.
I do not doubt she might have taken inspiration from her mentor.
What if that Krynia who rules is no longer the girl you remember?
oriana
Then it is what it is. I've lost any right to insert myself into her life after all that.
tower
I'm glad to hear this. I feared you might cut yourself on false expectations.
oriana
I am not that naive.
But there's another half to this. When the Crescent comes to mind, so does Ellerie.
So does the lack of anger in her eyes, only resignation, and a good lot of disappointment.
tower
But you do not regret doing that.
oriana
It took me those years up to now to convince myself of that, Tower.
That's the only way I can work up the courage to return to the Crescent.
tower
Then if you are decided, let us go. I relish the opportunity to see my grandaughter.
oriana
Elis help anything that stands in the way of that. Even if it is Irinde.

Ending Cards

Ellerie Ending

Tower Ending

Rosswick, One Last Job
Unwilling to leave the Crescent which he has called home for decades, Rosswick was cut to pieces by the enraged warriors of Irinde. His efforts in the assassination affected the Crescent more than his adventuring career.

The Greatest Guard
There was no warrior more feared than her by Ellerie's enemies. Some claim she is Elis's punishment for the world's sins, others say she is a malevolent god reborn. Word of her very arrival has made armies flee the field.

The Legend Who Never Was
She may have died young, but her incredible feats of slaying the Cold Caller in single combat and defeating an army of knights would form the basis for the folk hero “Lan the Lance".

Maurice, Doomed Loyalist

Perhaps it was a mercy for him to die on the Crescent instead of seeing the destruction of his Kingdom, his king and everything that he fought for, under Ellerie's brutal conquest.

As one of his few trusted servants, Maurice's king sorely missed his services. With loyalists being a rare commodity, it was not long before the Great Houses tore the Kingdom apart.

Sorbet, Two for One

The Sorbets argued much over how their time should be distributed, but finally settled. One week beating people into meaty chunks on the orders of Ellerie, the other week writing about the value of life and living.

The Sorbets argued much over how their time should be distributed, but finally settled. One week in Irinde's library uncovering the secrets of their existence, the other week committing murders authorised by Krynia.

Empress, the [Title too long]

Default

The Empress's territory was quickly invaded by the settlers' expansion, which she did not take kindly to. Dozens of victims later, a manhunt was called and the self-proclaimed sovereign's sovereignty was finally put to rest.

If Vermillion ascended

The Empress knew her days were numbered once the settlers expanded inland, yet was too prideful to flee. She entered the Gate, hoping that if she failed as Vermillion did, she'd still be granted the powers to fight off the invaders.

Default

The Empress spent many more years on the verge of ascension, yet she still wavers, unable to bring up the courage to cross that final threshold. Perhaps it will take the end of her lifespan for her to take that ultimate risk.

If Vermillion ascended

Vermillion's fate deterred Empress from seeking ascension. She turned her eyes towards more mortal desires, bringing her empire into reality. She carved a little kingdom for her people into the middle of the chaos enveloping the coast.

Dazzledart, Retired Killer
The life of a “Master Assassin” was not as thrilling as Dazzledart hoped. Tired of Ellerie's employ, she returned to the Crescent only to find her home replaced by farms and fields. At least she has her hoard of gold to spend.

Dazzledart, Yellow Storm
Dazzledart would find there is little demand for a Master Assassin. She rebranded to a Master Mercenary, but it just wasn't the same. A few more years on the road was enough for her to return to the Crescent, searching for home.

Berd
Berd searched for years, but was never able to find Locust. Berd found himself pillaging once more, but this time as part of Ellerie's army. He rose up the ranks and earned a noble title, but he couldn't forget.

Big Berd & Loc, Mythical Duo
Locust was drawn to the promise of glory on the Mainland, and dragged Berd with her. The duo became legendary for their feats of miraculous survival and became the subject of many rags-to-riches tales.

Berd
Berd searched for years, but was never able to find Locust. In his grief, Berd devoted himself to his studies. He soon became the greatest Archsage of his era, yet Locust's loss was no less keenly felt.

Big Berd & Loc, Legendary Duo
Berd tried to ease Locust's boredom with life in Irinde by having her recover ancient tablets for research. He didn't expect her to rediscover a lost type of magic which they became pioneers of, “cultivation.”

Gil Goldfist, Cursed Scion

Default

Gil was determined to escape the fate of his ancestors, who'd all died early deaths. After almost choking to death on a steak, he paid for security to ensure he was safe at all times. His security killed him to take his gold.

If Level 10+

Gil refused to let the curse which befell his ancestors scare him any longer. He was a rising star among Ellerie's officers, before falling prey to an ambush. Many mourned the potential which had been cut short.

Default

Gil was determined to escape the fate of his ancestors, who'd all died early deaths. After almost dying in a botched mugging, he shut himself away in a lavish home built for himself. The house collapsed and killed him instantly.

If Level 10+

Gil refused to let the curse which befell his ancestors scare him any longer. With his newfound courage, he led many expeditions to conquer the wilderness for the Crescent. He was accidentally killed in wage dispute.

Helisent, Full-time Adviser
Helisent intended her stint with Ellerie to be a bouncing pad towards greater opportunities, but with said opportunities being crushed one by one under Ellerie's war machine, she begrudgingly stayed on as a consultant.

Helisent, Freelance Adviser
Helisent leveraged her time in Ellerie's service to become an advisor to a minor noble house. Tales of her genius grew alongside tales of her disloyalty as she frequently found better employment. A bitter client had her executed.

Caloogo, Tragic Hero

Caloogo rescued a child on the road, who when told Caloogo was the spirit of a hero, begged him to help his town. Unfortunately, said town was under siege by Ellerie's army. Caloogo died a death fitting for a true hero.

Caloogo told everyone he met he was the returned spirit of a fictional hero, and why wouldn't everyone believe him? His endless energy and willingness to do good made him a celebrity to the people of the Crescent.

Xeo, Piteous Poet

Xeo followed Ellerie to the Mainland to fight for his lost love, but his heart was never really in it. He was killed by an unexpected arrow while distracted, composing another melancholy poem.

Xeo stumbled through day after day, until one day, he disappeared. The collection of poems he left behind would be studied by students for generations to come.

Caloogo, Adventure Awaits & Xeo, Fresh Start

The pair did not travel far before they were embroiled in the struggles of the Mainland. They accidentally started a minor rebellion in their need to do what's right, and cemented their place in history as heroes of the people.

Caloogo's enthusiasm did much to raise even Xeo's spirits. They had many odd adventures in their travels, all of which Xeo carefully documented. “The Travellings of Caloogo and Xeo" was an insightful manuscript into that era.

Zububai, a Deity Reborn
Zububai remained in Ellerie's service just to see what might happen. She saw the heights of Ellerie's empire and its inevitable collapse. In the aftermath, there was plenty of opportunity to cultivate a cult of her own.

Zububai, Too Many Faces
Zububai disappeared after the war. She reappeared years later, then disappeared, then reappeared, and so on for centuries, under a new identity each time. She has been a prophet, a hero, an inventor, a...

Zububai, the Returned

If Zububai reached S-rank in dark magic

Zububai followed Elis's footsteps back to the upper realms and remained a wanderer. She wonders why Qiulan and the rest cared when this original world is, at its core, no different from the one they escaped.

Unari, Lost the Gamble
With Unari dead and discredited, Frosthaven quickly fell into Ellerie's hands. The city and the Frostfires still quietly commemorate her for what she put on the line to fight for them.

Unari, Sleazy Hero
In the wake of Ellerie's death, Unari found a a new demanding opponent, one with little restraint. Rallying the eastern coast to her side, Unari was the last bastion of preventing the Dragon from consuming the entire Crescent.

Ivadne, Frozen Fist
Ivadne quickly became known as the most uncompromising of Ellerie's generals. She led the army that crushed the Capital and took particular delight in burning the lands of those who condemned her Princess.

Ivadne, Icy Insurgent
With the Crescent useless to her, Ivadne returned to the Mainland. She learned to discard the mentality of a knight and stir up discontent from the shadows. It would not be long before she got the war she wanted.

Lilac, Idle Sectmaster
With Tower gone and unsure of what to do with himself, Lilac returned to the feuding Sect. He was pushed into the position of Sectmaster when Ellerie had his peers executed for plotting. His tenure was quiet.

Lilac and Lilac
With Tower gone and unsure of what to do with himself, Lilac returned to the feuding Sect. He stayed on the fringes as a nominal member, continuing to wonder if there was something else he could've done with his life.

Hagendire, Loyal Lieutenant
Hagendire served loyally in Ellerie's new regime as one of the old guard. She waited for his inevitable betrayal, but it never came. Everyone agreed he was still a complete twat, but he always got the job done.

Hagendire, Pretty Reliable
Hagendire's abrasive nature earned him no friends in Irinde, but people begrudgingly admitted he was a skilled administrator. He was frequently the man most grumbled about but there was never a call to be rid of him.

Jo, Wisened Wings

Default

Joyful Jo's ideas of non-interference with the humans was challenged when the settlers seized control of the land. Knowing that it was a losing battle, Joyful Jo aided in the migration of his people to greener pastures.

If Vermillion ascended

The loss of his latest pupil turned Jo against the idea of ascension. He joined a chapter of the Virtuous Veil to oppose free ascenders, though he always strived to educate them the danger of ascension. If they refused to listen...

Default

Joyful Jo continued to preach the principles of non-interference with mortals on the Crescent. Knowing he will not ascend in his lifetime, Jo spent his last years writing about how the drive to ascend is a worthy, but corrupting, force.

If Vermillion ascended

With the settlers taking the lands where the Skyward Gate was, Jo found an opportunity to lure settlers into demolishing the gate. Jo peacefully passed away years later, now that the obsession of his life has vanished.

John XVI, Ghoul Infiltrator
Against Pomelo's advice, John XVI joined the expedition south. While unskilled, Ellerie saw her value as an assassin. There are few things more terrifying than being eaten inside one's home, a fate shared by a few of Ellerie's foes.

John XVI, Culinary Tourist
John XVI decided to aimlessly tour the world with the goal of trying fresh cuisines. She was particularly fond of Sundown Bay's pastries. Coincidentally, disappearances seemed to pop up in whatever place she just visited.

Foxberry, Freedom Fighter
After Ellerie prevented her from distributing her books as she desired, she wrote several highly critical pieces on the overlord. Wanted for these crimes, she was recruited as the voice of the resistance and her bounty reached new heights.

The Fantastic Foxberry
Foxberry was free to present her accounts of the events on the Crescent as fact. This infamous work was what Foxberry would be known for, despite her major contributions to mapping out so much of the Crescent.

Aigo, Library Overlord
Ellerie sent boxes and boxes of books looted from her conquests to Aigo. He was soon the caretaker of the grandest library in the known world and was insistent it remained public, albeit with enforcers to ensure proper conduct.

Aigo, Honorary Archsage
Satisfied with his small but prized collection, Aigo began to teach classes on his studies of several decades. Many of his students became great mages, an incredible feat considering Aigo never learnt to cast magic.

Tasel, Master of Merchants
With determination, work ethic and no small amount of bribery, Tasel's business grew so big it would exceed even the Guild, not limited by the borders of the Crescent. Even Ellerie was one of his debtors, much to her chagrin.

Tasel, Man Made of Money
Tasel's business expanded its operations to all sorts of goods under his watchful eye. He refused to take a side in the civil war on the Crescent for which he was reviled by both, but he stood firm in his independence.

Dune, Unfulfilled Ambitions
As soon as it was feasible, Ellerie ordered Dune away from the Crescent to serve on some distant border. She passed away from illness years later, bitter to the end that she never got what she thought she deserved.

Dune, Ashes to Ashes
Dune was turned to ash by Krynia in an instant. Her family, the Ironsmiths, were also the first to be purged as an example to others who might dare to challenge Krynia.

Nerysa, Legacy Unforgotten
Out of respect, and perhaps no small amount of guilt, Lindros ensured Nerysa's contributions to the world would be known. If she still lived, she would hate the fact that these monsters would be what she was remembered for.

Oren, the Old Chief
It was only years after his death, when Irinde was mourning the loss of so many of its youth, when the people whispered again about how life was so much better under Chief Oren.

Nerysa, Hidden Archsage & Oren, Upstanding Bloke
The pair settled down in a remote village and spoke rarely of their past. Despite their best efforts, each of their four children was unsatisfied with a quiet life, each setting out with a dream to make a mark on the world.

Basil

If Thyme survived

Default

Basil, Peace at Last
Driven to the only option he felt he had, Basil attempted to assassinate his sister. Against the odds he succeeded, but was in turn killed by the scion of his past victims, ending this bloody cycle.

If Mince & Basil spoke in 20x

Basil, Woeful Wanderer
Driven to the only option he felt he had, Basil attempted to assassinate his sister. Against the odds he succeeded, and with Mince covering for him, he was finally free to live his own life. He would learn to enjoy it.

If Thyme died

Default

Basil, Peace at Last
With Thyme dead, Basil did not feel anymore released from misery than he was before. He was hunted down by the scion of his past victims, a fate he felt that he deserved.

If Mince & Basil spoke in 20x

Basil, Woeful Wanderer
With Thyme dead, Basil did not feel anymore released from misery than he was before. With Mince covering for him, he was finally free to live his own life, but it was hard road to truly enjoying it.

Basil, Peace at Last

If Basil's level was lower than Thyme's

Driven to the only option he felt he had, Basil attempted to assassinate his sister. He was killed instantly, a fate he felt that he deserved.

Thyme, Big Boss in Town

Thyme kept control of Sundown Bay for some time, but it was increasingly clear to Ellerie this defective leader needed to be replaced or there was going to be a riot. Before Ellerie's men could arrest her, she fled with her gold.

Thyme kept control of Sundown Bay for some time, but when Krynia came east, the people of the Bay banded together to welcome their new leader who had to be better than Thyme. She narrowly escaped a lynching and vanished.

No more time for Thyme

If Basil's level was higher than Thyme's

Thyme was living the good life, her control of Sundown Bay entirely uncontested. She did not expect her long-suffering brother to finally snap and snap her neck, ending her reign of terror on the Crescent.

John, the Precursor [Ashen Guard]

John got too confident due to their undying nature and fell down the Puncture. By the time they got back to the surface, thousands of years had passed and it was a better world.

John abused their ability to not die by being a professional stunt performer. Their best show to date involved a triple backflip while sailing down a waterfall and juggling bombs.

John, the Precursor [Ashen Sniper]

John committed many horrific crimes against the Mainland and its people. When accused, they pleaded the defence of non-sentience at the time of crime. The verdict was “not guilty."

After the conflict, John disappeared. No one knows where they went, except for a mysterious note that said “Cerulean Coast".

John, the Precursor [Mogall]

John followed Lindros south, hoping to steal all of his secrets. Decades later, they used what they learnt to build up a monster army and conquered a few small kingdoms.

John killed an archsage and impersonated him for years, communicating through only letters. When the deception was discovered. John was already gone with all the secrets.

John, the Precursor [Gargoyle]

For no apparent reason, John declared themselves “Ruler of the Crescent." Everyone agreed to play along even if John's decrees were never implemented.

John placed a small sign in front of a bridge with the words “John Land" and demanded a small fee for anyone using the bridge. The authorities turned a blind eye to this.

John, the Precursor [Tarvos]

John dropped the axe to become an orator. It is said their speeches could stir up frenzies and move the crowd to tears within seconds, always advocating for a better Crescent.

After awakening, John understood the cruelty of the Crescent. Their teachings which they hoped would improve future generations saw them titled as “the Father of Ethics."

Chixin, Chosen Chef

Though Chixin could never taste its own dishes and never understood the concept of hygiene, it still became a famed chef. Its signature dish was “Staircase to Damnation", a broth with a smell like death and a taste like... not death.

Though Chixin could never taste its own dishes and never understood the concept of hygiene, it still became a famed chef. Its signature dish was “Gateway to Paradise", a twenty layer pastry drenched in custard and pegasus cream.

Murky, Fleshweaver
While rival mages began to develop their own automatons, Murky was Ellerie's secret weapon to ensure her own remained on top. Rumours about her insidious experiments to produce these results could never be proven.

Murky, the Defiler
Left to her own devices, Murky would spend years perfecting her art, on participants both willing and unwilling. Her final experiment was on herself. The horrifying results of this was immortalised in history as a warning.

Nameless Goddess [Quilan]

Some still whispered her name, but in time, those voices also grew silent.

Her name has been lost to history.

Default

Acielle, Lifelong Pilgrim
Acielle searched for years and years, looking for a reason to be chosen. She only returned to Enan as an old woman, and was shocked to find a massive city where there was once a little town. It was a satisfying life nonetheless.

If Acielle lost her powers

Acielle, Hero of the Hour
Despite having no affinity for magic, Acielle studied fervently to have Justice back by her side. There was a new wrong to right in the world, and her name was Ellerie. Acielle was a symbol for those who resisted Ellerie's reign.

Default

Acielle, Lifelong Pilgrim
Acielle searched for years and years, looking for a reason to be chosen. She only returned to Enan as an old woman, and found Enan exactly as she left it, a rustic town on the Crescent. It was a satisfying life nonetheless.

If Acielle lost her powers

Acielle, Ordermaster
There was more than one way to be a hero, and almost none of them need magic powers. Acielle used her fame and gold to fund an order of warriors dedicated to keeping peace, doing more good than a one woman crusade would.

Officer Whipjack
Whipjack rose in the ranks of Ellerie's army due to his seniority, but never changed his ways to act befitting of his position. It was agreed among conscripts that Whipjack was the least demanding commanding officer.

Wily Whipjack
Whipjack gambled away all the funds he had built up in Ellerie's service. With a shrug, he returned to the roads, living life as he did before. The only difference is that his tall tales now had a hint of truth to them.

Francisca, Early Retiree
Francisca served as one of Ellerie's senior officers for a few years, but retired right before the fighting got truly deadly. She built two mansions using all the gold she earned, one for just herself, one for her wyvern.

Francisca, Head Mercenary
Francisca found a better way of making lots of gold, having other people make lots of gold for her. Her mercenary company was the largest on the Crescent, covering matters from rescuing kittens to guarding trade ships.

Marlow, Puppet Leader
Marlow was chosen by Ellerie to take charge of Irinde, not because he was remotely qualified, but because Ellerie was sure he was too lazy to betray her. She was right. Marlow did the minimum and delegated the rest of the work.

Marlow, Alcoholic Savant
Marlow continued to live a breezy life in Irinde, funding his alcohol expenditure by selling off his tomes. His almost indecipherable scribbling gave rise to the magic school of Marlowism, embracing a lack of uniformity and structure.

Rohesia, the Headtaker
Rohesia taught her techniques to another bright generation of aspiring swordmasters. As she saw them off to fight in the name of Chief Ellerie, she somberly wonders if she'll outlive another generation of her students.

Rohesia, the Painter
Rohesia declined to teach any more students and instead devoted herself to the arts. Her sword techniques said to be unrivalled among swordmasters would never be passed down, but a few of her paintings would survive.

Krynia, Coastal Dragon
Krynia was Ellerie's most trusted lieutenant, having full authority in Ellerie's absence. She did not shy away from using her blessing to crush all that stood in her way. The threat of a dragon rampage encouraged surrender.

Krynia, Young Tyrant
Krynia spent the next decade re-conquering every corner of the Crescent, embodying the spirit of Irinde. She was immensely frustrated by the rebels that kept seeming to pop up, but one day, she thought, she will kill them all.

Vermillion, the Fire Emblem

Default

Still far from ascension, Vermillion decided to reward himself with a temporary stay with Krynia. That stay grew less temporary as he gorged himself on the town's tributes, and became some kind of mascot for Irinde.

If Vermillion ascended

Ten thousand realms received a vision of the Red One who brings the end of all ends. The discarded shell followed Krynia to the Mainland, where the visage of a demonic fowl appeared in folklore for generations.

Default

As settlers began to move further inland, Vermillion realised he'd have to find less settled lands to be his stomping grounds. A historian discovered that places with tales of a killer chicken seemed to draw out a path.

If Vermillion ascended

Ten thousand realms received a vision of the Red One who brings the end of all ends. Meanwhile, the discarded husk stayed with Krynia in Irinde, content to merely exist. Perhaps one day, he'll be something more.

Chalice, the Blind Saint
Chalice found herself cleaning up after Ellerie's wars. She amassed a following among the Sect's believers while carrying out what she thought were basic responsibilities, healing those in need. Many statues were made in her honour.

Chalice, Sect Visionary
Chalice travelled to the Mainland and hit Sect politics with all the grace of a warhammer. She formed her own faction within the Sect, bringing the fresh perspective of “I'll beat you over the head with a staff if you don't listen."

Telon, Changed Man
With his sister's ambitions in tatters and unsure of where to go, Telon settled for a simple life cultivating the land. He lived quietly and never talked about his past. When one spoke of the man Telon used to be, they were not believed.

Telon, Ashes to Ashes
While defending his sister, Telon was among the many turned to dust by Krynia during that night of destruction. He is still remembered for his wanderings as a duelist.

Yvette, Born for Battle
Yvette followed Ellerie to the Mainland as one of her senior officers. While she struck fear into the hearts of her foes, her squad always had the highest casualty rates. Her career was ended by an unexpected mutiny.

Yvette, Thrill of the Hunt
While Yvette missed the large-scale wars on the Crescent, she found entertainment in bounty hunting. She particularly enjoyed the month-long hunts tracking down and slaying dissenters to Krynia's rule, the greatest prey.

Reiker, Glorious Gallant
A few months of mundanity was enough to convince Reiker to join Ellerie's expedition to the Mainland. He excelled in the vanguard as its most daring warrior, but was shot to pieces during a particularly valiant charge.

Reiker, Restless Rider
Reiker joined Irinde's town guard, but a life defending the town from mundane dangers was a far cry from his ideal adventure. One day, he abandoned his post, saddled his horse and went north, never looking back.

Raylin, Local Landlady
Raylin spent all of her gold buying as much land in Irinde as possible. When Irinde became the Crescent's most prosperous city, Raylin became a wealthy woman. She refused to do anything more with her gold except save it.

Raylin, Local Legend
Raylin spent all of her gold buying up as much land in Irinde as possible. When raiders came to Irinde once more, none fought more fiercely than Raylin with the value of her property on the line. Few dared dodge her debts after that.

If Gecko is literate

Unseen Gecko
Gecko found herself far more comfortable with ledgers and numbers than swords and battle. Many were shocked when Ellerie named Gecko among her most valued officers, not knowing how Gecko kept armies supplied and fed.

If Gecko is illiterate

Galeforce Gecko
The contrast between Gecko's ill appearance and her skill in battle helped her reputation grow. She did not enjoy war, yet she fought, because she felt obliged to. The last thing her victims saw was a single sorrowful eye.

If Gecko is literate

Unseen Gecko
None was more supportive of Krynia's claim to chieftainship than Gecko. While Krynia broke skulls, Gecko replenished Irinde's coffers and kept the town running. She was content to serve Irinde from the shadows.

If Gecko is illiterate

Galeforce Gecko
Many would challenge Krynia's claim to the Crescent, and many would be slain by her most loyal enforcer. Gecko's heart was heavy each time she killed for Krynia, but she would say nothing. This was her role in the world.

Mince the Magnificent
Mince rejected Ellerie's offers of positions of power and stayed as Irinde's chef, leaving a lasting impact on the Crescent's cuisine. While he knew he should be glad for his friend's success, he still feels a tinge of guilt.

Magnificent Mince
It took a few years for Mince to bounce back, but bounce back he did. The town celebrated Mince's return into the culinary business. His restaurant was a safe haven during Irinde's darkest hours, Mince defending it with his life.

Lindros, Maker of Monsters
As Ellerie's conquests grew, Lindros became the most infamous mage in the known world. He cared little for his reputation, continuing to refine his craft and insisting to himself it was worth the progress. Pomelo never left his mind.

Pomelo, Merry Artisan
Pomelo found himself losing his passion for his craft, knowing it'd go to support Ellerie's war efforts. He found joy in being a toymaker, delighting children with mechanical marvels. He awaits each of Lindros's letters eagerly.

Lindros, Burdened Scholar & Pomelo, Just Living Life
Tired of the bloodshed plaguing the Crescent, the pair retreated to a secluded abode where they lived the rest of their days in peace. Their combined innovations uncovered after their deaths would throw the world into disarray.

Tower, Toppled Titan
Ellerie ensured a grand funeral was held for the old warrior and that he be remembered as a hero of the Crescent. He was usually portrayed as Ellerie's mentor, a depiction he'd undoubtedly have disagreed with.

Tower, the Untoppled
Tower was never one to admit defeat, even against the passage of time. Even as he and Oriana became more infamous, he ensured no situation was truly ever dangerous enough. Nothing can possibly topple the Tower.

Oriana, Adventurer No More
With the Crescent pacified, there was no more reason for Oriana to fight. While she enjoyed peace, she knew it was at the cost of others. She slept with sword in hand, believing that war would one day return to the Crescent.

Oriana, Vigilante in the Wind
Oriana's journey took her across the world, obeying no authority and dispensing her own justice whenever she saw fit. Tales of the swordswoman and the old warrior spread, their names haunting many a local despot.

Ellerie, Coastal Conqueror
The Mainland was not ready for the Crescent's invasion. Backed by an army of men and monsters, she repeated an ultimatum. Join her fledgling empire, or perish. While an empress in all but name, she still insisted on being “Chief."

Ellerie, Burnt Candle
While Ellerie remained a controversial figure in the history of the Cerulean Crescent, her rapid rise and fall would become the subject of many plays. They were evenly split on her depiction as a tragic hero or a wicked villain.

Iosaf, Trying His Best
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. With no particular aim, they used his long life to learn everything under the sun. It may take millennia, but they'll be the best one day.

If Iosaf was defeated by Ellerie:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They tried to run for “Mayor of Irinde" ten times even when no such position existed. Irinde gave them the title to avoid an 11th campaign.

If Iosaf was defeated by Oriana:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. Their fame reached each corner of the world for their incredible dances that drove crowds wild. Perhaps not the best, but they were good.

If Iosaf was defeated by Tower:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. Much to everyone's surprise, they attempted to join the Sect despite immense pushback and altered their policy on sentient monsters.

If Iosaf was defeated by Pomelo:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They found value in a career as a shipwright and while their ships were sturdy, they were always excessively large for humans.

If Iosaf was defeated by Lindros:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They found enjoyment in learning magic and became the most famous mage in history, inventing new schools of magic on their own.

If Iosaf was defeated by Raylin:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. Their next goal was to take to the skies. The sight of Iosaf flying over cities on a dragon ten times their size was immortalised in art.

If Iosaf was defeated by Reiker:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They originally intended to befriend a horse to learn how to ride, but found they enjoyed simply raising them more. They lived among the herd.

If Iosaf was defeated by Gecko:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. Impressed by how Gecko beat them despite size difference, Iosaf tried something similar. The title “Giant Slayer" had two meanings.

If Iosaf was defeated by Mince:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. Iosaf became an apprentice under Mince. While their odd culinary combos were never mainstream, it appealed to a niche audience.

If Iosaf was defeated by Yvette:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They took to archery and broke records, not for accuracy, but for most arrows fired in a minute. They got the nickname “The Shooter."

If Iosaf was defeated by Telon:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. They took to duelling as a measure of being good at something. Most opponents gave up without a fight, intimidated by his size.

If Iosaf was defeated by Chalice:
Iosaf never figured out how to be the best, but was comforted that no one else knew. A lot of staves snapped between their big fingers later, Iosaf found themselves enjoying healing wounds far more than causing them.

If Iosaf was defeated by Vermillion:

Iosaf, The Best
Iosaf left humanity behind to join the chickens. They found them odd, but they got on well. Within a few decades, they would shatter the heavens and ascend into the next realm. They had finally found how to become the best.
