Chapter 4: Riverside Tour

Opening

narrator
Quintus disappeared in the night. All our markers are gone. We are truly lost in this green hell.
I could swear to Elis that we've been here before, yet the landmarks are all wrong. Are the trees shifting?
I must be going insane.
-Journal of an unknown adventurer
(Ellerie sits in a dungeon cell. She is approached by a hooded executioner.)
ellerie
How's the eye, Maurice? If only I had aimed more to the right. Then I'd be less sickened by the sight of your face.
maurice
Spitting bile as always, but no substance to back it up. As much as I'd like to be rid of you, the Prince has an offer for you.
ellerie
He would speak through his mutt rather than come himself?
maurice
You think a bastard like you is worth his highness' time?
Give up the names and hiding places of your co-conspirators.
Then you may be spared, as much as I wish it wasn't so.
ellerie
...
maurice
I see your hesitation. You're simply an opportunist, a snake.
There isn't a shred of loyalty within your blackened heart.
ellerie
(It can't all end here. Not before I've trampled my family underfoot.)
Do you really expect me to believe I'd be spared? An architect of the scheme?
Save your blathering. I will not obey the will of some pathetic pretender.
maurice
(smirks) Good, good! Your precious princess already has her head dangling over the east gate.
ellerie
(closes eyes) ...
maurice
Unlike the last eight years, there is no one to save your sorry hide this time.
ellerie
(opens eyes) Your pitiful excuse of a liege knows only foolish ideals, and nothing of ruling.
The noble houses will eat him alive, and you along with him.
maurice
Whether or not this happens is none of your concern, because you'll be joining your princess tomorrow.
ellerie
I'd rather join my liege than to wag my tail at the feet of a short-sighted fool.
maurice
A dog or not, I'll be watching from the stands while you lose your head.
Enjoy the rest of your miserable existence, Captain, Captain, CAPTAIN!
(Ellerie wakes in the Seahawk's cabin.)
offscreen
CAPTAIN! GET UP HERE, NOW!
ellerie
And I was having such a good dream. Can't go five metres without a problem.
(Ellerie arrives above deck to find the river is choked with vegetation and the drawbridge beyond has been shut.)
ellerie
What the- How is this possible? And the bridge?
tower
Explanations can wait. ALL HANDS ON DECK!
ellerie
Why the hell are we landing?
pomelo
Captain, there's a mass of roots grasping at our hull!
If we don't move forward we're all going under!
lindros
It's a retractable bridge! If they have the means of operating it, we must seize it.
tower
We charge, or we sink.
(The camera focuses on a cyclops standing on the riverside.)
iosaf
I'm a bit sick of these funny folk trying to hunt me down.
When will they learn I am the best there ever is?
(The camera focuses on an abandoned house by the riverside.)
???
What wakes me from my trance? The crashing of the waves.
The sounds of blades?
narrator
If a phantom is killed, the Spirit Caller will summon another each turn.
Bael counts as Armoured for the purpose of effective damage.

New Guide Entries

The Princess Plot

The Princess was never in line for the throne due to antiquated traditions, but with the heir apparent being a weak-willed simpleton, only she deserved the crown and its power.

Yet the traitorous noble houses desired a king they could pull by the ears, and our plot was uncovered before its execution.

There is little doubt that the crown's authority is nothing more than a farce, but it is what the false king deserves.

Green Tide

The Green Tide is when the actively malevolent forests expand outwards, bringing hordes of the Crescent's beasts with it.

The threat such an incident imposes is enough to have the Crescent's factions unite, if only temporarily.

Turn 7

(The ground shakes and greenery spontaneously erupts across the riverside and the Seahawk.)
pomelo
Curses! The Seahawk won't last much longer, hurry!

Conversations

Gecko & Oriana

gecko
Oh Gods, I can't, I'm not-
oriana
Gecko! What's the matter?
gecko
They're even more terrifying than the stories! Can we really win?
oriana
They may be unnatural things, but they're no stronger than any of us.
gecko
That's hard to believe. Why do so many adventurers lose to them?
oriana
Many a fresh adventurer was caught not by their lack of skill, but by their fear!
Treat them as you would any other foe, and their main advantage is gone.
gecko
Okay, I just have to not think about the claws, and fangs, and giant eyeball-
oriana
Gecko, I've seen you fight. You're a strong girl. As long as you keep a good handle on yourself, you will win.
gecko
Ah, really? Am I really good enough?
oriana
You are. Stick with the crew, and together we'll end this scrap in no time.
gecko
Alright! I won't let everyone down!

Reiker & Raylin

reiker
By Elis's right kneecap, this soon?
raylin
What happened to all that posturing in front of Gecko?
You're gonna back down now?
reiker
You know it was all hot air. This is the real deal!
Oh man, that's some sharp fangs!
raylin
Sharp or not, there's no way they can catch my Torie.
(smirks) We outpaced the Heron Knights, these schmucks don't stand a chance.
reiker
(grins) Yeah, you're right! Zieg won't be caught by any monster!
We'll ride rings around them.
raylin
Moreover, we're a team. The deadly duo! Between the two of us, we're unstoppable.
reiker
Now I'm raring to go! Hiyah!
(Reiker charges off.)
raylin
(frowns) Maybe that was too much of an ego boost. Don't get careless!

Iosaf

Combat

iosaf
You're facing the best. You don't stand a chance.

Combat w/ Lindros

iosaf
Quiver in fear, puny man.
lindros
You speak? That's not possible!
there's not been records of anything like this.
Could my research be incomplete?
What else have I missed?
iosaf
He's gone mad with terror. This will be easy.

Combat w/ Gecko

gecko
Eeek! Calm down, Gecko. You can do this.
It's just a dumb beast.
iosaf
Dumb beast? My brain is three times the size of yours.
gecko
Aaaahhhh!

Defeat

iosaf
I am... Not the best?

Perhaps I've always been a frog at the bottom of a well, thinking I was truly invincible in my little world.
But no more, my eye is opened.
Allow me to join you and seek what it means to be the best.

(The Best is transferred from Iosaf to the victor.)

Locations

House

???
Too long have I meditated, looking for peace within myself.
But enough! I hear the call, I feel my blood warming. I crave battle!
(Vermillion joins the battle.)

Left Stairs

B. Patricks
About time some reinforcements showed up!
You take care of the rest, I'll just get to cover.
(He escapes.)

Right Stairs

Francisca
I can't believe it. Someone actually came for us.
I'd help, but my wyvern's too injured to fight. I'll only slow you down.
(She escapes.)

Ending

If Francisca and Patricks were rescued

b. patricks
Thought for sure I was done for. I cannot thank you all enough.
francisca
Likewise. Easy job, my left buttock.
Who could've expected a Green Tide this far down the river?
ellerie
I doubt we could have found you two if Johnny didn't give us forward notice.
b. patricks
If my hired hand was as competent as you were, I'd be at Irinde by now.
francisca
Bah, anyone short of Elis herself couldn't have fought them off alone.
b. patricks
For the price I'm paying for your services, I would have thought otherwise!
ellerie
If you'll excuse us, we'll be on our way.
b. patricks
Aren't you going to escort me back to Irinde?
ellerie
We have our own objective to pursue. You'll be fine the rest of the way.
b. patricks
This is outrageous! What could be more important than my safety?
francisca
Looks like you're stuck with me for a bit longer.
b. patricks
Cheap bastards.

If only Patricks was rescued

b. patricks
I guess my luck hasn't run out yet! Thank you.
ellerie
I'm both happy, and paid, to help.
b. patricks
Find anyone else?
ellerie
Only you.
b. patricks
Did none of my guards survive? Useless adventurers.
ellerie
Speaking ill of the dead?
b. patricks
They don't mind. They're dead. I suppose you'll escort me back.
ellerie
Im afraid we're on a tight schedule. You can make the trip yourself.
b. patricks
Bah, adventurers always do half a job when paid for a full one.

If only Francisca was rescued

francisca
I thought I was a dead woman when my wyvern went down. You have my gratitude.
ellerie
Think nothing of it. What happened to your charge?
francisca
If you didn't find him, then the odds aren't good.
Damn, looks like I'm not being paid for this trip.
ellerie
I'm in the same boat.
francisca
My wyvern's injured, but we can make it back on foot.
Best of luck for your journey.

If Iosaf was recruited and survived

tower
Let's address the elephant in the room.
ellerie
I have no idea what you mean.
tower
Oh shove off, you know what I'm talking about. We're bringing that monster with us?
ellerie
Are you calling our new friend a monster? What did he do to deserve this?
tower
Now's not the time for jest.
ellerie
It was a simple misunderstanding.
Mr. Iosaf has expressed remorse, and wishes to join us while he is on a path of self-improvement.
tower
It is unnatural. I have never seen a monster capable of communication, much less speech and reason.
ellerie
There's always a first for everything. There is much we do not understand.
tower
The Crescent does not play nice. There must be some dire scheme of sorts.
ellerie
I believe what I see. We need every scrap of manpower we can get.
And if it comes from a monster, I'm not complaining.
tower
This is ridiculous.
ellerie
Worst case scenario, we can kill it a second time. In the meantime, I could use an expendable meat shield.
tower
Bah, you're rolling the dice. I'm doubling the night watch.

If Vermillion was recruited and survived

vermillion
Is no one going to appreciate my prowess?

ellerie
Monsters out where they shouldn't be, operating complex mechanisms,
and initiating an organised ambush. Lindros, tell me what's going on here.
lindros
Why does everyone always assume I know everything?
pomelo
What he means is that he has absolutely no idea.
ellerie
Considering how much you go on about the pursuit of knowledge, I naturally assumed you would have more of it.
lindros
Cut me some slack here. I was sure I had read every record available.
pomelo
Records on the mainland are decades out of date by now.
When it comes to stuff like this, a local knows best.
ellerie
I suppose you know a tad more than our knowledgeable friend here.
lindros
Look who's talking.
pomelo
As settlers pushed inland, the Crescent pushed back, in the form of Green Tides.
It's been a decade since the last, but its brought development to a standstill.
ellerie
THIS is the seasonal natural disaster Oriana mentioned?
I suppose it is natural, but monster incursions do not come to mind!
pomelo
The arboreal monstrosities are plenty natural.
They're also the only things that can coordinate them.
lindros
This runs contrary to what we know. They lack the capacity for thought.
They lack language. They lack souls.
pomelo
Just saying what I know. If the Tide has hit as far out as here,
the settlements further inland are in for a world of pain.
ellerie
I sure do appreciate Tower and Oriana warning me beforehand!
pomelo
It's odd, cause this cycle shouldn't have come so soon since the last.
lindros
Surely, we continue. We can't let this chance be wasted.
pomelo
Lin, I don't think you quite understand how bad it is.
ellerie
This is... unfortunate. I will need to consult with our two experts.
(Ellerie walks over to Tower and Oriana, who are in the middle of an argument.)
tower
... thought we agreed not to involve her!
oriana
I agreed to nothing!
We didn't know about another Green Tide!
tower
What do you suggest, then?
Throw her ailing body at the dangers of the Workshop?
The Green Tide has never struck in that direction.
oriana
There's a lot of things that have never happened, like this cycle of the Green Tide coming this early!
tower
Regardless of-
oriana
You misunderstand, Tower. This is not negotiable-
Hello, Captain. You must be a little confused, yes?
ellerie
Confused isn't strong enough of a word, but Pomelo caught me up.
tower
Are you surprised? This is the Crescent.
ellerie
How does this affect our current situation?
oriana
Docking anywhere along this stretch of the river is now out of the question, but that aside, we should continue.
The Green Tide rises from the woods-
tower
They are the woods.
oriana
And as you know, our plan is to sail to the end of the river, then march past Tuskur's Pass, where the lands are barren.
Meanwhile, Green Tides advance towards any major settlements.
the Workshop's opposite direction.
ellerie
I have to trust your appraisal. I've put too much into this to back down.
tower
A bit of bravery from our captain is always appreciated.
oriana
What's more, Captain, I request that we stop by the bend to pick up my family.
My family has been staying in a secluded location, potentially at risk from the Tide.
ellerie
I heard you telling Tower that this was non-negotiable.
oriana
(smiles) You're right, Captain. This is a non-negotiable request.
ellerie
I'm obviously not going to say no. This daughter of yours, is she the reason you're so eager to enter the Workshop?
tower
Put two and two together, have you?
oriana
(serious) The Workshop was the shining jewel of the old world's knowledge.
Of engineering, of sorcery, but more importantly, of medicine.
We exhausted all our leads on the Mainland when we met, so...
ellerie
(How do you expect me to trust your appraisal with that in mind?)
I'm sure your efforts will come to fruition. I'm eager to meet her.
oriana
My daughter's lovely. You'll get along well.
